(1 Customer Review)
After the slightly disappointing Black Cherry Acid Lab (if only because it was too short), David Fiuczynski quickly came back with this impressive collaboration with electric cellist Rufus Cappadocia. The album also features contributions from percussionist and drummers Daniel Sadownick, Gene Lake and Ralph Tobias, plus clarinetist Matt Darriau and singer Lian Amber. You'd think that the mean, twangy guitar riffs and solos of "The Fuze" would eat a cello alive, but please understand that Cappadocia's playing usually comes much closer to fretless bass than anything close to an acoustic cello -- he's more Tony Levin than Yo-Yo Ma! The set kicks off with "Mektoub": after an introduction featuring the cellist playing arco (one of the rare moments on Kif where one can identify the instrument for what it truly is), the piece builds up to one of Fiuczynski's trademark slow-tempo funk moods. The guitar lines hint at North-African scales, while Sadownick's percussion work enhances the Moroccan feel. Each track provides a setting for the duo to explore exotic sonorities -- titles likes "Phrygianade," "Chinese GoGo" and "Purple Vishnu" are self-explanatory. At times it almost feels like a recipe, but Fiuczynski's creative soloing -- and the fact that he has been using twangy Middle-Eastern and Far-Eastern-like melodies long before this album -- makes it work. And you never know when an innocent-sounding Klezmer melody will turn into a monster hard rock riff. "Prayer for My Father," slow and emotional, provides a highlight. "Gaida," co-penned with Matt Darriau, who also plays clarinet in it, is another stand-out. ~ François Couture
Based on the music of Arabia, Asia, and Eastern-Europe, "Kif" is Eastern Exotica and Western Exstatica. It ranges from rocked-out madness to plaintive meditations, and effortlessly incorporates the sounds of the East with the grooves of the West. David F

Kif CD music
$9.99 Led by Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull had commercial and (varying) critical success with BENEFIT, AQUALUNG and THICK AS A BRICK. However, it was after 1973's A PASSION PLAY, a musically and thematically bold "concept" album, that the band seemed alarmed by the critics' nibbling little pens. Anderson was reportedly so wearied by critics' vitriol that he announced he would never tour again--but did a year later. (Despite the critical hostility, A PASSION PLAY soared to No. 1 in the U.S.).
Musically and lyrically dense, A PASSION ...
| | Miroslav Vitous Universal Syncopations CD (2003)
Kif music CDs
$14.65 On his first jazz date as a leader since 1992, Czechoslovakian bassist and composer Miroslav Vitous comes out of the gate with a host of heavyweights on one of the more lyrically swinging dates in modern jazz. Vitous' engaged, pulsing, and deeply woody tone is featured in the company of John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette. While the crystalline sound of Manfred Eicher's ECM is everywhere here, as is the open-ended speculative jazz that the label is ...

| | Here Comes Shuggie Otis/Freedom Flight CD (2003)
Kif music CDs
$17.75 It took an Australian label to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by David Byrne with his Luaka Bop reissue of Shuggie Otis' forgotten 1975 classic, Inspiration Information. In the ensuing two years, no U.S. label stepped up to license the rest of the catalog, which consists of only two more recordings, Here Comes Shuggie Otis, from 1971, and 1972's Freedom Flight. Australia's Raven, one of the world's premier reissue labels, has picked up the gauntlet in spades and presents both on a single, gorgeously remastered CD. Shuggie's earlier outings stand on their own two feet as well. Here Comes Shuggie Otis was released when the guitarist and songwriter was only 14. His father, Johnny Otis, produced the recording, and co-wrote the album with his son. Some of the session players include Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, Leon Haywood, Al McKibbon, Preston Love, and many others, including a chamber string group. Shuggie's vocals were not yet confident, but the groove-heavy tunes and his guitar playing more than compensate. The production is a shape-shifting morass of fades and phasers with lots of space. Standout tracks are the baroque psychedelic blues of "Oxford Gray," the tough guitar and B3/piano interplay on "Funky Thithee," the beautiful and tender "Jennie Lee," the funky horn-driven R&B on "Hurricane," and the shimmering, sacred blues of "Gospel Groove." On Freedom Flight, the roots of Inspiration Information are everywhere. Shuggie wrote four of the album's seven tunes, did all the arrangements, and helped Johnny with production suggestions. The senior Otis produced the set and allowed all of Shuggie's "weird" ideas full-reign in production, and he was joined by a host of musicians from the first album, along with George Duke, Aynsley Dunbar, and the backing chorus of Clydie King, Venetta Field, and Shirley Matthews, among others. Shuggie plays a slew of ...
