Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; English Subtitles A deceivingly simple film about the uncomfortable romantic relationship between a 60-year-old German cleaning woman named Emmi and a 40-year-old Moroccan immigrant named Ali, ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL is one of director R.W. Fassbinder's most powerful pictures. Brought together by a jeering barmaid, Emmi and Ali are surprised to find that, after their initial meeting, they like one another. After a somewhat awkward courtship, the two unlikely lovers marry, angering Emmi's children and revealing the startling prejudices that pervade everyday German life. Ali: Fear Eats The Soul Reviews: "...Driven by [Fassbinder's] usual fervor and honesty. There's a sense that he was working fast, through a compellingly personal inspiration, and that gives the film a rare vitality..."
-- Mark Chalon Smith, Los Angeles Times "...The film is powerful but very simple....In ALI, there is a startling tenderness..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...While it's certainly Fassbinder at his most tender and compassionate, his devastating use of color and startlingly distancing mise-en-scene are in full effect..."
-- Gavin Smith, Film Comment

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul review
$10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.
Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of ...

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul DVD
$32.19 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul movie DVD
$9.89 Canadian director David Cronenberg, whose impressive oeuvre includes such disparate works as THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, M. BUTTERFLY, and SPIDER, has made what might be the best film of his career with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Loosely based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the movie stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a quiet, easygoing family man who runs a diner in a small Indiana town. But when two dangerous criminals come into the restaurant prepared to wreak havoc, Stall turns hero and shoots them both. After Stall's story is blasted all over the media, Philly mobster Carl Fogaty (an excellent Ed Harris) shows up, claiming that Tom is actually former hit man Joey Cusack--and they've got some important business to finish. While Stall insists that Fogaty is mistaken, his family--his wife, Edie (Maria ...
