Personnel includes: Dwele, Slum Village. Producers includes: Dwele, Jake & The Phatman, Ronald Estill, Dwayne Bastiany, Pete Kuzma. Dwele, first heard on the cool, relaxed chorus of Slum Village's "Tainted," isn't a leather-lunged shouter or, the likely guess, a silky-smooth crooner. Blessed with a fine, sensitive voice, he's a Marvin Gaye disciple, and like his influence, he has his own ideas about production and performance. That stubbornness makes him a difficult artist to pigeon-hole but an easy one to enjoy, especially for listeners tired of hearing constant repetition in R&B. Mostly self-produced and recorded at his home in Detroit, Subject favors the gauzy beats-and-bliss production style of Slum Village auteur Jay Dee. Though it's a familiar format, it's one that works well as a bed for his vocal style, which uses odd cadences, extended phrasing, multiple layers of vocals, and often his own whispered responses to his main lines. Halfway between R. Kelly and Madlib, Dwele writes toward R&B stereotypes but really makes the songs his own. On the title track, unsurprisingly a self-production, he accomplishes a rare feat, pulling off an inspirational song that truly sounds inspired. Dwele doesn't sound quite as interesting when he's not producing himself; a pair of outside productions, the single "Find a Way" and "Money Don't Mean a Thing," are intelligent, sensitive jams, but they make it clear that Dwele's talents don't tend to the anthemic. Like Gaye before him, he sounds more content and more inspired when the reins are in his hands. ~ John Bush Meet the nu-soul--same as the old soul? Well, Dwele's debut certainly contains similarities to old-school artists such as Donny Hathaway and of course Stevie Wonder--all the evidence you need to connect the dots is here in the shimmering Fender Rhodes piano that predominates on SUBJECT. But Dwele is made of more contemporary stuff. He's a rapper who's found his singing voice, though the only time his hip-hop roots really show is in the tumbling lyrics to the coming-of-age song "Twuneanunda" and the title track. Mostly he's a smoothly sophisticated singer with a canny sense of what works in an arrangement, and while he obviously has deep ties to what is now ancient R&B history, his sound is undeniably modern, and irresistibly seductive. Most of the cuts on SUBJECT are down-tempo, though the incidence of satin sheet-oriented boudoir ballads is kept to a surprising minimum. He's a more thoughtful lyricist than that, as evidenced by the nuanced, humorous "Lady at Mahogany," about a tryst gone awry, in which he shows he's not averse to telling tales on himself. SUBJECT is both light enough in feel and accomplished enough in execution to leave you hungry for more. The Source (7/03, p.154) - "...On his hypnotic debut, SUBJECT, Dwele again sings like he's tiptoeing in Timbs on the road to love..." Subject Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Refreshing........ This guy has a very refreshing and mellow style that is somewhat similar to Musiq or Donell Jones. "Subject" has become one of my favorite CDs in a very short period of time because it is so subtle and laid-back. Favorites are "Twuneanunda" and "A.N.G.E.L." and "Let Your Hair Down". Also listen to: "The Truth", "Sho' Ya Right", "Without U", and "Lady Of Mahogany". The whole CD is very chill-mode for sure and is worthy of being added to your collection.

Great Style (unique) Dwele has a unique R&B sound and style. His music is really laid back. I like listening to it while I'm working at the office. I think he's sort of a cross between Musiq Soulchild with a D'Angelo twist. Submitted by mgm2000on (Mannheim, Germany) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Best Album of 2003! - Well Worth Buying*** This guy has talent! He is brilliant. I don't regret a penny I spent on this album. Each song is sung excellently and Dwele's style is smooth and charismatic with each delivery. Im so impressed that I refuse to lend any of my friends this CD! I can not choose my favourite track because I love them all, but what get's me going is "Let your hair down", "Hold on", "Money don't mean a thing", "Subject" and ALL OF THEM! Definately Don't Sleep On This!
Enjoy people - Enjoy!

one of the best at his craft....
...few R&B/Soul artists measure up to Dwele. He's One of the most talented voices out in the music biz, no question about it. Submitted by Culture (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Smooth..... I posted a review on this CD before I realized how good it really is. I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars for this CD now. In my first review I missed two very brilliant songs - "Kick Outta U" and "Subject". Does this guy bring it or what? I mean he really is Neo Soul for real, but he mangages to be different and posses his own style, not an easy thing to pull off in such a stellar group of artist that define the Neo Soul niche. In addition to two songs I mentioned above also check out "The Truth", "Twuneanunda", "Sho' Ya Right", "A.N.G.E.L.", "Without U", "Lady Of Mahogany", and "Let Your Hair Down". One of the pioneering and best-loved boy bands of the 1980s, the New Kids on the Block in their prime represented rosy-cheeked cuteness and innocent puppy love. In the long, album-less interim between 1994's FACE THE MUSIC and 2008's THE BLOCK, the Kids did a lot of growing up. The intervening 14 years have rubbed the teenaged glow off the group's sound and sensibility, and replaced it with a club-oriented vibe that is more concerned with sexing its listeners up than charming them with nostalgia. From the opener "Click Click Click," which details a homemade photo shoot, it's clear that the emphasis is on adult themes, while "Grown Man" and "Big Girl Now" also sing the praises of adult fun. The album's sonic make-up is taken from contemporary R&B, radio-ready hip-hop, ...
