Dub Narcotic Sound System: Calvin Johnson (vocals, guitar, melodica); Heather Dunn (vocals, bass, drums, percussion); Chris Sutton (mini-Korg synthesizer, bass, drums). Personnel: Calvin Johnson (vocals, guitar, melodica); Heather Dunn (vocals, drums, percussion); Gibby, B&B, Kitty Boots, Tilson, Zahava Seewald (vocals); Adam Forkner (guitar); Chris Sutton (drums). Photographer: Krista Kay. After a five-year hiatus following 1998's Out of Your Mind, Dub Narcotic Sound System returned to the recording scene with this four-song, 21-minute EP. The music is consistent with their past efforts: a fusion of dub reggae, funk, and rap, with some of the most nonchalantly goofy vocals and lyrics you're likely to hear on records boasting such blends. The band does play with an inviting raw looseness and some definite bottom funk. For a four-song release, it's pretty varied. "Handclappin'" has the poker-faced vocals for which Calvin Johnson's most known, "Petrolbzz (Version)" is a spacy, slightly sloppy melodica-dominated instrumental, and "Mega-Clash (Version)" is the most sonically experimental, throwing in all sorts of jazz-funk improvisation, distorted vocals, and improvised-sounding electronic effects and noises over the course of its seven and a half minutes. The standout cut, though, is "Sabley Goodness," due to the sexy yet slightly eccentric dubwise romantic spoken vocals of Heather Dunn. ~ Richie Unterberger Handclappin' Music | List Price | $10.98 (You save $0.43) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Experimental Rock CDs, Rock | | Label | K | | Orig Year | 2003 | | All Time Sales Rank | 287003 | | CD Universe Part number | 5841822 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | May 06, 2003 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Engineer | Diana Arens; Adam Forkner | | Personnel | Calvin Johnson - vocals, guitar, melodica Chris Sutton - mini-Korg synthesizer, bass, drums Heather Dunn - vocals, bass, drums, percussion

| | Erase Errata At Crystal Palace CD (2003)
Handclappin'
$11.39 Erase Errata: Jenny Hoysten (vocals, trumpet); Sara Jaffe (guitar); Ellie Erickson (bass guitar); Bianca Sparta (drums); Maya (unknown instrument). Recording information: Tiny Telephone (01/2003). Erase Errata's second album, At Crystal Palace, continues the band's ongoing flirtations with order and chaos, ping-ponging between the two with such ease that it's clear that even their most disjointed moments are under their control. Songs such as "Driving Test" and "Go to Sleep" are as angular and tense as ever -- the way Jenny Hoyston snarls "Go to sleep!" on the latter ensures a string of nights spent with eyes wide open -- but every now and then the band lets down its avant-garde and allows some melodic, and even poppy, moments to exist within its formidably sharp music. "Ca. Viewing" is ...
| | Bill Laswell Roir Dub Sessions CD (2003)
Handclappin'
$8.99 Few American record labels have done more to further the cause of modern dub than New York's ROIR imprint, which has not only reissued classic dub recordings, but also actively encouraged contemporary artists to reinterpret the tradition according to their own vision. And since bassist and producer Bill Laswell is among the most prolific and original modern exponents of dub, it was inevitable that the two would find their way to each other. Laswell ...
