Bloody Judge DVD

 A near-masterpiece from Franco.
Christopher Lee gives one of his best performances of his career in this witch-finder film from the wonderful Jess Franco. Dramatically powerful and surprisingly cohesive, the film also contains a disturbing and mesmerizing forced lesbian encounter near the end of the film. For those of you who have seen Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy and were impressed, you'll want this film in your collection, too: it shows that Franco was equally capable of making a great film on a high OR low budget.

 Bloody rubbish
Imaginative content remains at zero in this plodding and derivative attempt at a witch-hunting epic. Amidst risible torture scenes, corny plotting and buffoonish characterization Christopher Lee gives a near-pantomime performance, while the director's incompetence ensures that the predictable action proceeds at a leaden pace. The extra features are guilty of causing further boredom and consist of feeble monologues by the utterly pompous Lee and the waffling Franco, uninteresting deleted/alternative scenes and repeated trailers for the pointless PG version. It would be better to confess to anything than to suffer this ordeal twice!
