The wife likes this one Ok - I realize that this film has a cult following but - other than the great flight scenes it's highly implausible to the point I can't watch it straight through - I spent a lot of time on aircraft carriers and can appreciate the Cinematography challenges - good scenes of HS-9 (Helicopter Squadron #9) and the "Jolly Rogers" Fighter squadron, the Fighting 84th - a few Top Gun F-14 carrier approach scenes used - Kirk Douglas (a good actor but not that good in military parts) is too old and out of character for the part of the Captain - (the boys on JAG have found better actors for this part) I'd guess he was never in the Navy and if he was, he wasn't on a carrier for sure - his body language decries his lack of exposure to the bridge - also his lines are scripted by someone in Hollywood with some Navy consultant feeding the input and every other line being jazzed up.
The most accurate part was the action in CIC - when things go wrong on a carrier CIC is usually where the operations and bridge officers go for answers.
It was interesting to see the A7's hitting the deck with their + wing angle of attack employed - if you are into sci-fi and liked the Philadelphia Experiment, Top Gun, and even the bridges at Bridges at Toko-Ri you will like this one.

A Nice Sci-Fi Movie to Watch The Final Countdown has a very interesting premise: What would you do it you could take todays technology (in this case a nuclear aircraft carrier with highly sophisticated aircraft) back in time to the time when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? That is an interesting question and I saw it in the theatre for just that reason. However, they barely scratched the surface there as they were to busy saving a dog for a woman and a guy who got stranded there when the ship first went back in time. A mild disappointment in that respect but still a decent film to watch. If you love Sci-Fi you might like this film. Submitted by j.coonrod (Beaverton, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
