Long Ships Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Long Ships "hit the rocks" Given that this movie was made in the 60’s, it not surprising that it lacks authenticity in both the costuming and tactics of Vikings. It was made in a time when Hollywood was into the “hero” rescuing the damsel in distress and little regard was given for accuracy of the time period.
The script was what let the movie and the actors down. It was fanciful beyond belief and didn’t do anything to tell the true story about these warriors of the sea. The swordplay was pathetic as were most of the action scenes. The tactics of the Vikings defending their grounded long boat were laughable. No consideration was given to the correct use of a Viking round shield in combination with the axe and sword, nor was there a Viking berserker in sight.
Having said that Richard Widmark carried the movie and keep it entertaining. He gave a strong performance as Rolfe and gave the character some depth. I must confess to being a Widmark fan and therefore declare my bias at this point. I think he is very much under-rated as an actor and was never given a chance to show his full potential and range acting ability. In this he carries the show and is able to show some of what he is capable of.
Sidney Pointier was not at his best in this movie. He does however go on to greater things and produce some great performances. Russ Tamblyn was far better in West Side Story. All he did in this movie was provide the love interest for Beba Loncar.
Over all this was a reasonable B grade movie with some great shots of a Viking long ship. I think it’s worth adding to your collection, but don’t rely on it for a history lesson.

Reasonable entertainment As a kid, I loved this movie and waited for years for it to be released on video. As an adult, I'm considerably more ambivalent. I have a real taste for this wannabe epic sword and sandal fare but this one has some weak points. For example, the scrawny Richard Widmark looks about as much like a viking (let alone the alpha male viking) as, say Jerry Springer. Sidney Poitier looks completely synthetic and frankly, silly in the Elvis Presley wig. I could go on. Still, this movie has its merit and is worth evaluating. $9.79 Einar (Kirk Douglas), a hideously scarred Viking warrior, seeks land acquisition and the hand of the beautiful Princess Morgana (Janel Leigh). Einar crosses paths with Eric (Tony Curtis) who has his sights set on the same prizes. The two have more in common than they know; unbeknownst to one another, they are brothers.
This 1958 epic was based on an actual Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok, a sadistic and adventurous sailor. While not very rooted in fact, the film is a rousing adventure with lusty, violent imagery very bold for its time. A scene where Janet Leigh's clothing ...

$10.09 WOLF CREEK is a grim and disturbing horror film, based on actual events in the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE vein. It's also beautifully shot, with director Greg McLean (in his feature film debut) making the otherworldly majesty of Australia's outback emerge as a part of the story. Cassandra Magrath and Kesti Morassi play the two young British girls traveling with their Aussie friend, Ben (Nathan Phillips), to Wolf Creek, the remote location of a giant meteor crater. When their car breaks down, a jovial, Crocodile Dundee-type named John Jarrett (Mick Taylor) offers to tow them to his even more remote auto camp. What happens next ensures, among other things, that surviving audience members will never think of Crocodile Dundee in quite the same happy way again.
In addition to McLean's painterly use of scenery in establishing mood, the film benefits from the slow, methodical buildup of character detail; the actors are given space to develop a believable rapport, something all too rare in this kind of film. The characters are ...
