To say that Socom: U.S. Navy Seals is a good, or even great game, is a huge understatement. The only way to describe this game is "Absolutely Brilliant!!". Anything less would be unfair to the developers (Zipper Interactive), who have thrust their heart and soul into this game.
The development of this game was overseen by a real Navy Seal team, who provided direct input, based on the real experiences they have encountered during their service, to ensure you receive the most realistic experience possible, short of becoming a Navy Seal yourself (which is no easy task). Everything is authentic, from the weapons you can use and their sound effects, the Seals attire for different terrain, the types of tasks your Seal team has to perform (there's no Rambo style "I can defeat an entire army single handedly!!" scenarios here), the hand signals given by the commander (you), right down to the commands and replies spoken/heard through the microphone headset.
Did I say "microphone headset"? Sure did!! One of the best things about Socom U.S. Navy Seals, is you can physically speak the orders you want your Seal team to perform and they will reply back with a hearty "Booyah!!" (or some other confirmation using Navy Seal lingo). The inclusion of the headset function alone makes this game stand out from all other titles. Add to that, the fact that the vocals commands have been well implemented (and aren't just some quick afterthought added in two weeks before release) and you have one very solid game, which has created yet another new genre for gamers everywhere to enjoy. You also have the option to input the commands using the D-pad, but it's nowhere near as fun. After you learn the different commands and what they do, controlling your Seal team will become second nature.
The graphics are great, not the best for the PS2, but are more than ample. The sound is brilliant, so turn the volume up. The gameplay is virtually flawless. Sometimes your Seal team doesn't follow orders precisely the way you want, but for the most part it works fantastically. Some publications reported that the AI for the terrorists was a little dumb, because they can be right in front of a Seal and not react. This does happen in the game, but I tend to think it's because your Seal is wearing the perfect camouflage for the terrain and lying motionless behind some tall grass. A real life Seals camouflage is so good, that this situation seems perfectly logical to me. How else could they get close enough to silently reduce the worlds bad guy population one by one?
I can't recommend this game highly enough. However, I can't recommend this game to everyone. It is a game for people who are patient. Running into a hot zone, guns blazing, will bring about a quick mission failure. The game is all about stealth and teamwork. To achieve a successful mission, you will need to rely on your Seal team to perform the required tasks while you watch their backs, or vice versa. If stealth, strategy and teamwork are your thing, BUY THIS GAME NOW SOLDIER!! ON THE DOUBLE!! MOVE IT, MOVE IT, MOVE IT!! Submitted by a reviewer (Perth, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Socom: U.S. Navy Seals Hints In most levels terrorists carry grenades of some sort. Because of this you won't have to carry them. One example of this is in Level 5. The terrorists carry AN-M8 grenades as well as the M67. So you should pack something other than the AN-M8 and M67. In Level 8 the mercenaries are packing M67 grenades.
