On Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, it should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band rolls through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger
To be indelicate, the vocal style that's taken grip throughout much punk/metal crossover music might be fairly characterized as the sound of a guy about to vomit into the microphone, amplified to 11 and aimed for maximum trajectory. Even within that narrow genre, the singing of John Henry on Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, crosses well beyond the bounds of (presumably unconscious) self-parody. The lyrics are printed (in teeny teeny script) in the sleeve, true, but even those who enjoy such sandpaper vocals and don't mind the difficulty in comprehension without a printed guide will be tired of the sound of a man spewing his guts out by the time this disc spins to a close. (And at 56 minutes, it's not a wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am affair.) It should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band does roll through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb, but this is agitprop that doesn't stand a ghost of a chance of achieving its mission, if that mission is to move listeners to think about some of the provocative issues the songs address. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. If it's a joke, it's one the bandmembers should take seriously; they're really underselling themselves if they're capable of playing in a more versatile range of any sort, but elect not to by choice. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Freya As The Last Light Drains CD (2003)
Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation
$9.79 While Freya's debut did mark an attempt by the Earth Crisis veterans to expand their lyrical and musical horizons a little, it's still clichéd hardcore punk with a little funk and occasional more standard hard rock influence. Karl Buechner's throat-straining drowning-howl singing wears on the listener just as surely as it must be wearing away his vocal nodes. The mood of anger and frustration pounds away in black-and-white patterns as unrelenting as the blurry, bleak black-and-white of the cover graphics. The words swim in a maelstrom of dejection and hopelessness, though small hints of the redemptive power of romantic love are heard in the title track, and a bit of optimism even peeps through in "Seize the Day." The occasional vocals by Darian Lizotte are the big surprise, at least within the context of music in which Buechner's grindcore approach hovers so heavily; Lizotte sings in a far more conventional high, ...
| | As I Lay Dying Frail Words Collaspe CD (2003)
Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation
$9.79 As I Lay Dying is one of many, many bands to throw their hat into the Swedish-influenced metal-hardcore ring in the early 2000s, joining fellow metal-label signees as God Forbid and Shadows Fall (Century Media) and Killswitch Engage (Roadrunner). Frail Words Collapse is a solid example of its genre, carrying the stereotypical hallmarks of harmonized dual-guitar riffing (often reminiscent of In Flames or Iron Maiden), heavy double-bass drumming, and roaring vocals that occasionally slip into a melodic, clean-voiced emo style. There are also a few more dissonant, "technical" passages that nod toward Converge and their ilk. The songs here are solid enough and well executed, and the production is adequate (if a little too clean and digital sounding). This album will appeal mostly to devoted fans of the genre who are looking for another slight variation on the In Flames-influenced metal-hardcore ...
