| | Elton John Breaking Hearts CD - Import Elton John Discography of CDs
In the early '80s, Elton John no longer dominated the singles and album charts the way he had during the previous decade. He was still hugely popular, but he was in the process of redefining himself as an artist when he released BREAKING HEARTS in 1984. Gone were the 12-inch platform heels, the outrageous costumes and wild stage antics, but his music hadn't really changed all that much. He still alternated chiefly between piano-based rock songs and melodic, emotional ballads, despite throwing in occasional new wave-sounding keyboards and other slick touches of the era.
"Sad Songs (Say So Much)", the record's high-charting hit, sports a melody that is hard to dislodge from the mind, even after a single listen. The chugging opening track "Restless" has a gritty Rolling Stones feel, while "Who Wears These Shoes" has a soulful, springy backbeat that is reminiscent of Motown groups like the Supremes. On the title track, John demonstrates his ability to write simple, affecting ballads. Alternating between his low and high registers, he is accompanied only by piano and a few high, Beatle-esque background vocals. "Passengers" has a sea-shanty flavor, with its sing-song, call-and-response chorus.
Digitally remastered edition of John's 1984 follow up to the resurgent success of "Too Low For Zero". "Breaking Hearts" would produce two Top 10 singles in "Sad Songs (Say So Much") and "Passengers". This edition includes enhanced packaging and sleevenotes by John Tobler.
German import edition.
Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat and 301 Studios, Sydney, Australia.
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, keyboards); Davey Johnstone (vocals, guitar); Dee Murray (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, background vocals).

Breaking Hearts
$10.59 The first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION included a bonus disc featuring rare tracks.
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, though not as thorough as the excellent two-disc set GOLD (released a year prior), is a handy overview of the Commodores' career, beginning with 1974's "Machine Gun" and concluding with 1985's "Nightshift." The only Top Ten R&B hits not included here are "Sail On," and a couple of later '80s cuts, so all the big funk jams ("Too Hot ta Trot," "Brick House," "Lady [You Bring Me Up],") and ballads ("Zoom," "Easy," "Three Times a Lady") are indeed included. This set also scores a little extra by including one of the band's best album cuts, 1976's "Girl, I Think the World About You," which has been left off at least 90-percent of all Commodores comps.
Although Lionel Richie was AWOL for most of the '90s, he's still a pop culture force to be reckoned with, and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION ably ...
| | Elton John Fox CD (1981) (Import) Remastered; Germany
Breaking Hearts
$11.99 Edition contains remastered tracks, enhanced packaging and sleevenotes by John Tobler.
Like David Bowie, Elton John made himself over in the 1980s from his over-the-top glam-rocker image to one that was less theatrical, more refined, even slick. The music was affected as well, as the '80s saw Elton flirting with disco, new wave, and several lyricists. He also flirted with danger, dropping some of the more obvious trappings of the Me Decade (the big glasses, for example) but remaining perilously close to its hedonistic excesses.
His principal songwriting partners on THE FOX were the sometimes-estranged Bernie Taupin, and Gary Osborne. Production duties fell to ...
| | Elton John 21 At 33 CD (1980) Enhanced CD; Import; Remastered
Breaking Hearts
$13.95 Elton John's first record of the new decade found him back on more familiar ground following 1979's thoroughly disco-fied VICTIM OF LOVE, which sold disappointingly. For the first time since the early days of his career, he had failed to reach a huge audience, so perhaps there was more at stake on 21 AT 33. It sounds much more like an Elton John record than its predecessor, with dreamy ballads ("Little Jeannie") and stomping, '70s-style rockers ("Chasing the Crown," one of two Taupin collaborations), along with some oddball touches like a strangely cheery-sounding cocaine song ("White Lady White Powder"). There's only one disco song, and it closes the album.
The record finds him collaborating with his former ...

Elton John was in something of a transitional period in the early 1980s. After he stopped touring in 1977, he continued to appear on the charts, but he no longer dominated them. In 1982, when JUMP UP was released, he was tinkering with his sound, as some of the ...

| | Penelope Houston Whole World CD (1993)
Breaking Hearts
$11.59 Penelope Houston And Her Band: Penelope Houston (vocals, melodica, autoharp); Eliot Nemzer (guitar); Mel Peppas (mandolin, guitar, background vocals); Steven Strauss (bass, background vocals); Kevin Mummey (drums, percussion).
Most old-school punk purists will never forgive Penelope Houston for giving up guitar-driven rock & roll for acoustic music (even if she did so several years before the "unplugged" phenomenon made such things fashionable). But anyone who has actually listened to The Whole World will notice that Houston's acoustic music is just as smart, feisty, and uncompromising as her work with the Avengers (it's not hard to imagine her old band cranking up "Glad I'm a Girl" or "On Borrowed Time"). And if her lyrics are less stridently political, they're also more intelligent and mature without sacrificing her opinions in the process (even her love songs reflect a refreshing warts-and-all realism). And while Penelope the Punk Goddess had a habit of wandering off-pitch with annoying frequency, Penelope the Singer/Songwriter is able to convey much of the same intensity with a lot more nuance and accuracy, and her band (anchored by Houston's husband and collaborator, Mel Peppas) makes up in resonance what they lack in volume. The Whole World is a strong and compelling album from a remarkably underrated artist; it's well worth a listen should it cross your path. ~ Mark Deming
"The 13 bittersweet accounts of love and miscommunication that comprise Houston's The Whole World radiate a hard-headed generosity of spirit that says as much about the artist's inner toughness as any rock band could. With her understatedly gorgeous melodies getting sensitive support from her acoustic combo, songs like "Qualities of Mercy," "Honeysuckle" and "Father's Day" illuminate complex emotional issues with understated eloquence." - Pulse Magazine. The Bio:Punk Folkie PopstarPenelope Houston has been called alot of things. In the New York Trouser Press Record Guide, Ira Robbins proclaimed her, at 19, as "...the archetypal indomitable rock'n'roll woman -- her strength and aggression are what elevates these tracks from energetic but typical punk to remarkable personal statements... the Avengers (her first band) ...
