This four-CD set from England's Proper label is one of the great music bargains of the era; priced just right, it encompasses 101 sides recorded by swing-era songstress Mildred Bailey between 1929 and 1942. From the earliest sides, accompanied by members of Paul Whiteman's orchestra (led by guitarist Eddie Lang with Hoagy Carmichael sitting in on piano as well as providing the song "What Kind O' Man Is You") and the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, right up through her last Columbia sessions with her husband Red Norvo, the sound is excellent. The state-of-the-art remastering brings out all of the detail right down to the rhythm instruments, and it lends Bailey's voice a special richness and intimacy. Each disc is separately titled, using a representative song of the period from the selection, and there's a nicely thorough booklet complete with sessionography accompanying the slipcased set. ~ Bruce Eder
Blessed with a light, clear, bell-like voice and a musician's ear, coupled with excellent diction, Mildred Bailey could sing a song with such conviction and warmth, that she would make you, the listener, believe in it, no matter how superficial the actual message. She was the number one white singer of the Swing era, she truly was Mrs. Swing. 100 tracks have been shoehorned onto the 4 CD's including all of her greatest recordings between 1929 and 1942. Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. Although it's been repackaged and reissued many times in many ways, Anita O'Day's pre-Verve output has never appeared so thoroughly (and so cheaply) as on Proper's four-disc box, Young Anita. Beginning in 1941 with her stint in Gene Krupa's popular band with Roy Eldridge, O'Day made an immediate impression, appearing on the hits "Let Me Off Uptown," "Boogie Blues," and "Just a Little Bit South of North Carolina." She had moved to the orchestra of Stan Kenton by 1944, and scored another hit by singing on Kenton's "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine."
