| | Maximilian Hecker Rose CD - Import Maximilian Hecker Discography of CDs
This 2003, 11-track release by German pop singer Maximilian Hecker - who has worked with Depeche Mode, Moby and Goldfrapp - includes "Kate Moss," "I Am Falling Now," and "My Love For You Is Insane."
Sophomore album for the German pop Casanova. 'Rose' is completely free of the 'classic Brit-Pop influences' as one could still hear them on the first album. Looking for comparisons you'd be tending more towards tracks by Sigur Ros, maybe also Simon and Garfunkel or even Suede. Maximilian has become more daring especially with his lyrics, very personal, exposed and denuding they've become, poetic and sensual. Produced by Gareth Jones who has worked with Depeche Mode, Moby, Goldfrapp, Wire, Erasure amongst others. Kitty-Yo. 2003. Rose album
$13.85 Chico Freeman showed a great deal of potential in the 1970s when the young tenor saxophonist recorded frequently. His profile has been a lot lower since that era, but he is still quite capable of playing rewarding music as he shows on this project, The Emissary, from 1995. Teamed with a group of San Francisco Bay-area musicians who form the Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, Freeman plays quite well on tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet. The music ranges from Latin jazz to world music, with a touch of reggae and pop, and a relatively straight-ahead "Seven Steps to Heaven." Since the Josh Jones group is essentially a rhythm section, Freeman is the main voice throughout and he comes up with plenty of creative ideas throughout this fairly accessible set. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Vikter Duplaix Singles: Prelude To The Future CD (2004) (Import) Germany
Rose music CDs
$8.69 International Affairs' problems -- with being overcooked, with trying to do too much -- are nonexistent on this handy summary of Vikter Duplaix's previously vinyl-only solo and collaborative work, released originally on MAW, Groove Attack, and K7. Gathered together from less-polished solo sessions (both under his own name and as Critical Point) and link-ups with the likes of Jazzanova and Wadud, Singles shows that Duplaix tends to turn in his best material when he's more concerned with raw feeling than slick precision. If you're remotely familiar with Duplaix, you won't be surprised to hear a mishmash of downtempo dance music and contemporary R&B. The remix of "Manhood" translates Kraftwerk's "Tour de France" into a slo-mo jitter that's more Timbaland-like than anything else he's done since, while tracks like "Messages" and "City Spirits" could be slotted into wildly varying ...
| | Paradise Now DVD (2005) Widescreen; Subtitled

$14.45 Shot on location in both Palestine and Israel, PARADISE NOW is an enthralling drama about the possible motivations and actions of two suicide bombers. Director Hany Abu-Assad meticulously researched the subject before co-authoring the script with colleague Bero Beyer, and fought off a few armed Palestinians in Nablus, which is where the bulk of the film's shooting took place. The story follows two young Palestinian men, Said (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), whose lives in the West Bank city have ground to a halt. But when a shadowy figure named Jamal (Amer Hlehel) offers them a shot at martyrdom by carrying out a suicide attack in Tel ...

| | Surf City: The California Sound CD (1995) CD & Book
Rose music CDs
$12.89 The reason Surf City works as a good compilation is that it features examples of both the instrumental surf rock and the more radio friendly surf pop of the early '60s. The companion book issued with the CD is a phenomenal account of the style's history. Beginning with a brief look at the culture of white middle class society in southern California, the book shifts its focus to rather lengthy biographies of the genre's most prolific artists. It shows how the major players, like Dick Dale and the Beach Boys, were manipulated by record companies. The biography of the Beach Boys actually spends most of the time focusing on how the group was closely controlled rather than giving a blow by blow account of their career. The most disturbing ...

Rose music CDs
$22.39 Mail order reissue label Collectors' Choice Music's Buried Treasure: Lost Gems From Deep in the '60s Vaults is a survey of stray singles originally released between the late '50s and the early '70s by Warner Bros. Records and several other record companies that have been acquired by Warner Bros. over the years, notably Reprise, Atlantic, and Elektra. This is a collection of obscurities, even though 27 of the 40 tracks actually made the pop singles charts, with 17 of those reaching the Top 40, and five even becoming Top Ten hits. The roughly chronological sequencing makes the album something of a history of pop music over the period, as well as a history of Warner Bros., tracing the label's early close association with television production (starting with several songs related to the TV series 77 Sunset Strip) and continuing through the light pop and rock styles of the early '60s, the surf and folk booms, folk-rock, acid rock, and the rock & roll revival of the late '60s and early '70s. That's a lot of ground to cover, but compiler Bob Hyde makes it work by mixing familiar elements with appealing unknowns. Here and there, such notables as the Association, the Byrds (in their early guise as the Beefeaters), ...
