| | Bing Crosby Another Ride In Cowboy Country CD - Import Bing Crosby Discography of CDs
The follow-up to the Jasmine collection Cowboy Country Crosby Style, Another Ride in Cowboy Country compiles 22 more tracks from the Hollywood cowboy, including songs of the trail from unlikely cowpokes (Johnny Mercer, Sammy Fain, Livingston & Evans, Vaughn DeLeath) as well as a few with more ties to the genre (Gene Autry, Ernest Tubb, Bob Nolan, Floyd Tillman). With the exception of only a few titles, none of these were hits, leaving the great majority as either intriguing covers (a few) or slightly bland titles lifted from Hollywood westerns (many more). In the former camp are Bing's versions of early honky tonk standards like Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You," Al Dexter's "Pistol Packin' Mama" (one of the big hits), Tillman's "It Makes No Difference Now," and the Bob Wills classic "San Antonio Rose" (the last two recorded with brother Bob's Bobcats). Almost as fun as the first, especially for fans of Crosby's steady, laid-back-in-the-saddle approach to country & western. ~ John Bush
2003 marks the 100th anniversary of Bing Crosby's birth, and what more appropriate than Jasmine celebrating the talent of the man with a second collection of cowboy and western songs which demonstrates yet again his adeptness at interpreting the genre. C

Add an equally foreign instrument, like the oud, to a trio of drums, bass and guitar, and there's little or no chance that we'll hear anything palatable. So how is it that guitarist Brian Prunka and his ragtag ensemble have made something as pleasing as In Praise of Shadows -- a graceful union of instruments, gorgeous harmonies and colors? Perhaps Prunka's success comes from the way in which the tunes are tailored to the instruments rather than vice versa. Unlike groups that force "exotic" instruments into uncomfortable realms, each of Prunka's players is allowed to be himself; the traditions of the violin meet those of the guitar, and so forth. The former plays the gestures to which it is accustomed -- long drones, emotional and rubato phrasing, etc. -- and the latter comps along with the occasional solos, and drums and bass keep it together. The result is a blend that meets somewhere between Hungary, Lebanon and New York. Take "Aztec", for example. It opens like a fairly standard jazz arrangement -- a bass groove with cymbal accents. Then the violin arrives; it takes only a few bowings to transport us to a Gypsy village. Prunka complements this textural crazy-quilt with his Joe Pass-inspired mellow guitar tones. "Agritpop" sits aside a similarly vigorous stylistic Tilt-a-Whirl, layering string ...
