By 1982, Henry Paul was completely devoid of musical direction, let alone inspiration. After issuing a truly fine album in Anytime a year before, Paul decided on yet another musical change in direction. On his eponymously titled final album for Atlantic before re-forming the Outlaws, Paul took the hard boogie stance of Feel the Heat and married it to pop hooks à la Boston, Loverboy, and Styx, making for a truly disastrous finale. The shrill edges in the vocals seem to be trying to get something out of Bruce Springsteen's mileage as well. But the choruses on "Nightline" are right off of Styx's Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums. Synthesizers careen into incredibly shattering -- yet compressed -- power chords; the guitars and drums are more filtered through effects than they are played. While it seems Paul was doing everything he could to write hooks -- and who knows whether this might not have worked better if stripped down -- Peter Solley's production was so loaded with schlocky keyboard fills that it's impossible to dig the song from its instrumental trappings. Feel the Heat's bar rock sound returns on "Kamikaze Rock," with excellent lyrics: "Kamikaze rockin' and rollin' tonight/Just you and me baby." "Tragedy" has the synthed glockenspiels of Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town, and "Desireé," which could have been a hymn to the porn actress, is so full of clumsy lines and hanging musical phrases that it's embarrassing. Only "Heat of the Night," with its lead vocal by Valerie Carter, is salvaged from total ruin, and it has to do with the emotional authenticity of her performance against Paul's false bravado. "Circle of Silence" has a certain minor-key moodiness that almost rescues it from the bombast, but again, the lyrics are so drenched in cliché it never climbs out. And the album closes with a Loverboy-meets-Boston moment in "Cold War," and an attempt to be seriously political, which makes it even more laughable. It's hard to believe that the yob who made this rock & roll joke could possibly have created Grey Ghost or Anytime. This is an absolute waste of time, money, and energy. ~ Thom Jurek

4 stars Pure Power Pop
Henry Paul may have honed a country style all his own with his current band, Blackhawk, but his early days were anything but nitpickin' Paul's self titled release was pure pop magic. While Paul did get some airplay it quickly moved off the charts and into the dust bin of rock history. Too bad because Henry Paul managed to capture a true artistic style and sound that set him apart from everyone else. If you like southern rock with a good dose of popishness and a little polish then H.P. is for you.

5 stars Paul's Best Work!
Although I like The Eagles, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special, in general I am not a big fan of "southern rock". So I expected very little from this re-issue of former Outlaws frontman Henry Paul's self-titled 1982 release. Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise! If you love pure keyboard-driven 80's AOR, then this album is a masterwork waiting to be discovered! An awesome album, totally unlike his others! "Anytime" was a bit more in this direction, but somewhat more guitar oriented. His first two works as The Henry Paul Band, "Feel The Heat" and "Grey Ghost", fit firmly rooted in the afore mentioned "southern rock" genre for certain. But 1982 was a glorious year indeed if you love stuff like Loverboy, Spys and Fortune (USA circa '85). Relive the glory with this stunning re-release from Wounded Bird Records...thanks guys!

This collection of blues, gospel, folk, and even rock standards (Chuck Berry's "In the Wee Hours") is actually a compilation of material from live gigs, a track from the In Pittsburgh album, and various other home-studio recordings and live gigs. They have several things in common: First, they are all from a period where Loren Mazzacane Connors returned to playing music after a four-year hiatus and discovered the electric guitar as the means for his expression -- though he hadn't yet abandoned the acoustic entirely -- and second, before he discovered his now-trademark multi-tracking system of performance. Third is that this disc is a complete collaboration between Suzanne Langille and Connors. Each musician has a trademark style and a way of slowing things to a near dead stop, and filling it with a maximum emotional tension. Take, for example, the pair's reading of Berry's tune: Langille turned the fire down so low that the simmer is barely visible. But each word, each syllable, is enunciated in such a sensual, smoky way that the tune becomes a potboiler. Connors covers her with a blanket of singled-out notes and sparse phrasing that would ...

Robert Charlebois' follow-up to his groundbreaking 1968 psychedelic rock album Robert Charlebois/Louise Forestier, Québec Love was less extreme musically, as the singer/songwriter was finding a compromise between his folk influences and the American psychedelic movement. All For You
Annihilator All For You CD  (2004) (Import) Germany

Henry Paul
CD $28.89
Over the years, headbangers have learned that lineup changes are an inevitable part of Annihilator. The band's lineup is likely to change from one album to the next, and the Annihilator lineup that you're enjoying today may very well be gone tomorrow. For other bands, all those personnel changes could be a problem, but leader/founder Jeff Waters usually knows what he's doing -- and his hands-on approach serves Annihilator well on All for You. Some might argue that Annihilator isn't really a band -- that Annihilator is really an ongoing solo project for Waters, who is very much in the driver's seat on this 2004 release. True to form, Waters wears many hats on ...
City By The Light Divided
Thursday City By The Light Divided CD  (2006) Limited Edition; Digipak; Enhanced CD

Henry Paul
CD $16.19  3.1 stars Audio Samples
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The fourth album by New Jersey emo outfit Thursday, CITY BY THE LIGHT DIVIDED shows a striking new maturity. A loosely knit concept album partially inspired by a car accident that claimed the life of an old friend of lead singer Geoff Rickly, the album has a haunted, emotionally-charged lyrical mood that's matched by the wider stylistic range of the songs. First single, "Counting 5-4-3-2-1," is the most immediately accessible song the band has yet offered, closer to the melodic indie rock of Death Cab For Cutie than to the cathartic post-hardcore of the group's earlier records. As a whole, CITY BY THE LIGHT DIVIDED sounds like the work of an older, wiser band moving beyond the limitations of their early style.
It's becoming rather apparent that Thursday have just about outgrown the new-school post-hardcore scene that they were partially responsible for helping to birth in the early 2000s. They've always been a step smarter than the hundreds of bands that appeared in Full Collapse's wake, learning over time to rely much less on the scream/sing dynamic of early releases, realizing that subtle time shifts or powerfully ...

Scott Angel Burning Up Inside CD  (2007)

Henry Paul
CD $10.65
Even as a child in Long Island, NY, Scott always had a passion for music. Every chance he could, he’d sing along with the radio, grabbing anything resembling a microphone.Having a conservative family background, Scott attended the University of Miami where he received undergraduate and Masters degrees in Business. Because music was always in his heart & soul, Scott enrolled in a Jazz Vocal class during his senior year where fate led him to Jon Secada who was the instructor. The two built a budding relationship that resulted in private lessons combined with additional UM Vocal Technique classes.During this period, several local cover bands hired Scott as a front man. Simultaneously, he put his business skills to good use as a founder of a highly successful computer services company. Eventually, and due to the company’s success, Scott had less time for his musical pursuits. After a three year absence from the live music scene, ...

Henry Paul
CD $11.29  5 stars Audio Samples
Personnel: Mike Farris (background vocals); Ann West, Brenita Reed, Gale West, Kim Reed (vocals); Rob McNelly (guitar); Joe McMahan (acoustic guitar); Jim Hoke (accordion); Neil Rosengarden, Steve Herman (trumpet); John Hinchey, Bill Cooper (trombone); Eric Holt (Hammond b-3 organ); Matt Martone (keyboards); Dave 'Roe' Rorick (bass guitar); Jerry 'Roe' Rorick, Paul Griffith (drums); Eric McConnell (percussion).
On his second outing, 2007's SALVATION IN LIGHTS, former Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies frontman Mike Farris doles out a compelling collection of gospel-inflected blues-rock. Highlights of the album include a soulful take on Sam Cooke's "Change Is Gonna Come" and the gritty "Devil Don't Sleep," tracks that subtly nod to both Farris's adventurous rock roots and his clear sense of Christian faith.
Mike Farris' second album of gospel-inspired blues-rock drew a surprising amount of buzz from both Christian and secular media, considering its lack of commercial appeal. This ...
