Though the tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired many artists to create works celebrating the American way of life, few seemed as appropriate as COLORS by the Oak Ridge Boys. One of the longest-running groups in country music, the band started as a small-town Tennessee gospel combo in the early 1940's. In true Horatio Alger fashion, they eventually became one of the biggest-selling vocal groups in history. Although their personnel has changed many times, the Boys' signature four-part harmony singing has remained as warm, rich and familiar as ever. Here, the group assembles a top-notch collection of overtly patriotic songs that pay tribute both to American institutions and the country's indomitable spirit in times of crisis. Highlights include "G.I. Joe And Lillie," a real-life WWII love story written about tenor Joe Bonsall's parents, and the group's gorgeous a cappella reading of "The Star Spangled Banner." The Oak Ridge Boys themselves are a testament to the power of the American dream, and with COLORS they deliver a sincere and heartfelt effort that is likely to make even the most adamant cynic's chest swell with national pride.

Personnel: Gene Vincent (vocals, guitar); Paul Peck, Cliff Gallup, Willie Williams (guitar); Jack Neal (upright bass); Dickie Harrell (drums); The Jordanaires. Originally released on Capitol (811). Audio Remasterer: Kevin Bartley. Liner Note Author: Jeff Beck. Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, cut in October 1956, only four months after its predecessor, came about under slightly less favorable circumstances than the Bluejean Bop album. Cliff Gallup, whose lead guitar had been so central to the group's original sound, and rhythm guitarist Willie Williams, who was only somewhat less important to their sound, had been gone from the band for nearly two months when producer Ken Nelson decided it was time to cut material for more singles and a second album. Gallup was persuaded to rejoin temporarily for the sessions that yielded this album, and with him he brought not only a hot-sounding instrument but one first-rate original song, "You Better Believe," alongside a few other notable band originals ("Cruisin'," "Hold ...

$10.15 THE PATHETICS â âDIDNâT MEAN TO OFFEND YOUâ â ANGRY MONKEY RECORDS (PRODUCED AND MIXED BY THE PATHETICS; ENGINEERED AND MIXED BY CAPTAIN INSANE-O AT VINNIEâS HOUSE OF SOUND SPENCER, MA; MASTERED BY LAURA FLANNERY AT THE TREEHOUSE)Whatâs not to love about these guys? Punk rock sing-a-long tunes with an energy that makes you feel like youâre at a Ramones show, a NOFX like penchant for bathroom humor, sexual humor that should earn them a triple XXX Advisory stamp, and a tongue in cheek sense of humor that letâs you know that they must be from Wormtown; three or four towns west of Worcester actually, but Wormtown is not a geographical location, Wormtown is a state of mind. Though The Pathetics wait a dozen years or so between every album, itâs always worth the wait. They kick off this disc with the chuckle inducing, âPorno Picnic Basket.â The song describes a big stash of dildos and sex toys and sounds like something that would have fit on the Doctor Demento show (a comedy rock show that I havenât heard on the air for years). âMurder at the Meathouseâ plays like a lost Cramps song thatâs in the soundtrack to a slash âem up B movie. Hearing this well written, funny, punk rock, sing-a-long brings to mind another obscure reference, western Mass. comedy kingpins, The Pajama Slave Dancers. The frantic drumbeat and cow punk guitar that opens, âDude, I Love Your Bandâ cements that comparison. I like the line, âPlus I gotta say you have really nice gear.âIâve said that line to bands following the âIf you donât have anything nice to sayâŠâ rule. âCavity Searchâ is that band at its rudest and most inappropriate. They make getting strip searched at an airport or the back of a police car sound much more fun than it probably is (I wouldnât knowâŠhonestly.) I gotta give these guys credit for burning through 15 tunes in less than 35 minutes, but in between the great and the funny, there is the OK. âOffice Assâ qualifies as that.I like âCrazy Over Youâ for its funny lyrics. I understand that as a romantic song (from the singerâs perspective anyway) it should be a slow dance, but Iâd like to hear it done speedy punk rock style, but hey, maybe thatâs just me. The Pathetics get back to the funny with âAnti-Social Miscreantâ and âRock the Shit of Itâ and become a bit profound in spite of themselves. âAnti-Social Miscreantâ ...
