TIME SQUARED was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
While TIME SQUARED maintains the Yellowjackets' reputation for laid-back contemporary jazz, the musicianship is consistently strong. Tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer now and then recalls standard bop vocabularies with tasteful phrasing and timbre, while bassist Jimmy Haslip's tightly constructed bass lines surge alongside drummer Marcus Baylor's hi-hat-heavy timekeeping.
"Gabriela Rose" and "Claire" show the ensemble's penchant for romantic lyricism. Pianist Russell Ferrante is especially noteworthy on these tracks, as he is on the Thelonious Monk tribute "Monk's Habit," in which he delivers rich solos peppered with angular, idiosyncratic lines in the manner of the great bebop pioneer. The album closes with the impressionistic "My 1st Best Friend," featuring lovely excursions by Mintzer, proving The Yellowjackets capable of branching out into exploratory styles while still maintaining their fan base
Yellowjackets: Bob Mintzer (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, synthesizer); Russell Ferrante (piano, keyboards); Jimmy Haslip (electric bass); Marcus Baylor (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Jean Baylor (vocals).
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.JazzTimes (8/03, p.134) - "...An outstanding album filled with complex, wide-ranging music that showcases their compositional skills and exceptional artistry..." Time Squared Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) spot on This is one of those perfect albums. The chemistry between the players is great. The compositions are sweet. Time Squared
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, ...
| | Rippingtons Let It Ripp! CD (2003)
Time Squared
$9.65 On Let It Ripp, the contemporary jazz masters known as the Rippingtons offer a mixed exhibition of musical paintings that freely roam their "live" aesthetic more than on any previous studio project. Recorded with no outside musicians except for the horns of Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, and Steven Hoffman, this excellent collection of 11 original songs written by Russ Freeman exemplifies the culmination of 17 years of being on the road. Special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal (whose killer chops have been heard with the likes of Chick Corea's Elektric Band, among others) provides another level of energy ...

| | Yellowjackets Altered State CD (2005)
Time Squared
$15.65 The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max's paintings, but Altered State ...
