| | Paul Rodgers Now & Live CD Paul Rodgers Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Vocalist Paul Rodgers, best known for his work with the band's Free and Bad Company, is represented on this two-disc set. The LIVE album is the artist's 1997 solo venture, while LIVE has the singer performing songs from across his career.
In a career dating back to 1968, Now was only Paul Rodgers' second solo album of original material, following 1983's Cut Loose. Of course, in that time he fronted Free, Bad Company, the Firm and the Law, and in the early 1990s crafted tributes to Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix, so he wasn't exactly idle. Now was an album for Free and Bad Company fans, recreating those groups' guitar-bass-drums backing and bluesy hard rock sound. It has always been amazing that a singer as distinctive as Rodgers, whose gruff voice can be identified within seconds, has remained anonymous behind his group monikers. And it is doubly surprising since Rodgers has always performed the same kind of simple, driving rock. Now was more of the same: as a songwriter, Rodgers' lyrics rarely moved far from expressions of love and longing, and as a composer he never moved beyond a few basic chords. What mattered, of course, was that voice, and it was as powerful on Now as it had ever been. For good measure, the CD included a second bonus disc containing a 1995 live performance at which Rodgers performed Free and Bad Company favorites, an appropriate accompaniment to the essentially similar new material. ~ William Ruhlmann

$9.85 Some qualifying dates for History: The Best of New Model Army are important, because before signing to the EMI label in 1985, New Model Army released three 45s on the indie Quiet and Abstract labels. You'll have to hunt the Internet for those, but all the A-sides of their major-label singles are present and accounted for here. The set kicks off with their debut for EMI, the ferocious "No Rest," whose B-side, "Heroin," incidentally, brought the band an immediate ban. However, that didn't stop the Army from storming into the Top 30 regardless. Not that the triumphant triumvirate cared -- the year may have been 1985, but these Army members were still training from the dog-eared pages of the punk manual, and the occasional ban could only cement their street cred. And the Army had plenty of that, delivered up in their blistering live performances, their sarcastic lyrics (as "Brave New World" evidenced), and their strong political stance -- "51st State" has even more bite today than it did back in 1986. At the time, it was Thatcher's kissing up to Reagan that set the Army frothing, but she proved unstoppable, and perhaps realizing their inevitable defeat, the band marched off the battlefield and joined the "Vagabonds" flooding from the cities into the valleys of "Green and Grey." Yet, New Model Army were occasionally roused to rail again, as on the incendiary "Get Me Out," before begging for their home to return to the "Purity" of old, or at least a "Space" they could call their own. The original vinyl release of this set included a bonus 12" single, comprised of four previously unreleased songs/versions. Unfortunately, the CD reissue dispenses with two of them, adding new impetus to the New Model Army collectors' market. One wishes that a second disc bundling up the B-sides had been added as well, but that wasn't to be, either. Fans will have to settle for this: all the hits from Britain's most legendary post-punk punks. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

| | Sneeze Lost The Spirit To Rock & Roll CD (Import) Australia
Now & Live songs
$23.65 Here's an ambitious album from a band called Sneeze, includes guest shots from the Bernie Hayes Quartet, as well as string and brass flourishes.
Tom Morgan and Nic Dalton may be the mainstays of Sneeze, if for no other reason than that they do most of the songwriting. Still, there's such a cornucopia of players involved in this album, with the personnel switching around on virtually every track, that Sneeze seem like more of a collective pool than a proper band. Nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that there's such a breadth of styles and songs on this 18-track disc that it sometimes sounds like a various-artists compilation rather than the work of a specific artist. The genre that seems closest to their heart is early-'70s soul music, particularly the overly romantic and emotional kind. It's the early 2000s, though, so you get some postmodern twists, such as the gender-blurred "Too Much Man to Be My Woman" and the more explicit "I Want to Be a Woman" (sung from a man's point of view). That's not the whole picture, though. There are also some almost embarrassingly blatant, whether intentional or not, Elvis Costello-esque vocals; an apparently straight approximation of those 1970s songs when the woman would begin by talking no-nonsense heart-to-heart romantic confessions before breaking into song (on "(Don't Go) Distant)"; kinda Bowie/glam-era cops ("B.U."); fetching, dreamy pop on "I Believe in Marrickville (Parts 1 & 2)," sung by Lucy Lehmann, who unfortunately does not sing on any other track; and "Casual Cashew Daddy," which sounds like Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" wed to typically indie pop/rock wordplay. As emulators of early-'70s soul singing, Sneeze are kinda likable and kinda annoying, ...

Now & Live album
$33.59 This album by the Swedish black-metal band Dark Tranquillity includes "Edenspring," "Lethe," and "Of Melancholy Burning."
1995 was certainly a definitive year for the New Wave of Swedish Death Metal. At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul and In Flames' The Jester Race were released that year, both albums seamlessly meshing the melodic ambition of old schoolers Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with the aggression of '90s death metal; boasting instrumental chops and gifted songwriting, those two bands helped define the face of Scandinavian metal for years to come. ...
