BARE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
A true pop diva, Annie Lennox is a lady who doesn't like to be rushed. BARE is her third solo album in 11 years, and the first to contain new material since her first solo outing in 1992. Not to worry, though; she's still the same Annie you know and possibly love. Her songs are slowly, elegantly unfolding amalgams of pop and slow-jam R&B, and her strong, pliable voice fairly drips with emotional pain.
As on her breakthrough record DIVA, Lennox is an expert in the area of the torch song, laying out her heartbreak on a gossamer bed of sound surrounded by feathery pillows of strings and synthesizers. Whether or not you take the strikingly solipsistic liner notes seriously, it's easy to empathize with the anguish Lennox so stylishly expresses throughout BARE. Even when she lays all her cards on the table with "The Saddest Song I've Got," you feel pretty certain that she's still got more tricks up her sleeve that she hasn't even used yet.

Entertainment Weekly (6/13/03, p.96) - "...Amply effective in communicating the isolation, loneliness, and dread that dominate the singer's first solo album of original material since 1992's DIVA..." - Rating: B- Uncut (6/03, p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Songs like 'Loneliness', 'The Saddest Song' and 'The Hurting Time' are as potent as the titles suggest....She's still a class act..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/03, p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It recollects emotion with a raging tranquility....BARE is an album of stirring, stoic elegance. Bare Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Bare Necessities..... This is the kind of album to chill out to for it to have full effect and appreciate. Still sounding as good as when she first started, this music is deeper and when you listen to it with nothing else going on around you, you fully appreciate the effort that has gone into it. It gets better each time you listen to it. Submitted by ashley.briscoe (Manchester - UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Annie - change your producer This is not bad but could be much better. Electronic, carbon copy producing cut off the best from these songs. I would like to hear it in somebody else hands. Where is the music? Where are guitars, real instruments? It is so cold, soulless. Annie has good voice and writes not bad songs but needs the last touch. And it is still missing. INCREDIBLE!!!! What can i say about one of the best female voices of all time? Annie Lennox grabbed me the first time during her days with Dave Stewart and the Eurythmics. The orange hair, the voice, the attitude....It deffinately had a strong hold on me, now several years later i have everything she has released and i can tell you that BARE is by far her best work to date! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS... This emotionally captivating CD should be an inspiration to all artists of this genre. The lyrics, music and sensuous tone of Annie's voice truly draw you in. I am a fan forever. Submitted by a reviewer (South Kingstown, RI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Time To Eat My Own Words Down below, you will see a review I wrote for this CD entitled "Bare? How About Soft?" I complained that it was too sweet and lacked Annie's previous fire. I wrote the review after hearing the samples, not the entire CD. This was a mistake. The CD does not lack fire and passion. It is on a level of quality with "Diva" and "Medusa", but not a carbon copy of them. It is a natural evolvement from them. The lyrics are down-to-earth, the music is organic and harmonious, and Annie's voice sounds better than I have ever heard it. I couldn't live with myself without correcting this situation, because Annie is one of my Top Ten singers. She is a true artist, and anyone with any sensitivity already knows that. $9.55 Have problems? Of course, you do. You're an individual living in a society that values appearance over substance. Difference and uniqueness are rejected. Concern for your body outweighs the beauty of your soul. Money is the foundation, without which life can collapse suddenly. This is nothing new. 30 years ago Bob Marley sang of “Songs of freedom.” Throughout history, there has clearly been a conflict between the outer facade and the inner reality, between the physical and the spiritual, between what we touch and what we can only sense. Darkness and light, left and right, yin and yang, male and female – the list is endless, isn't it? “Someday Peace Love & Freedom” is the eternal flame of hope, a mantra for change. Countries go to war, financial markets go up and down, jobs come and go. These things you cannot control, or can you? How do you react to the chaos of the universe, whether it takes the form of a cheating spouse or an unbearable supervisor? I'm not going to say his CD has the answers, but it may be a helping hand when you need one.To date, “Someday Peace Love & Freedom” is my most critically acclaimed album. Logo Magazine dubbed it “The Voice of Social Conscience”. Out Music nominated this CD for 2004 Outstanding Male Album of the Year, winning the Fresh Fruit Festival Award for Best ...
