In a similar fashion to Judy Garland, Alice Faye was clearly an actress even while making records, selling every performance and exhibiting that pure exuberance that Hollywood demanded during the golden era of the '30s. Born in 1915, Faye survived a childhood spent in Hell's Kitchen and debuted in a chorus line just before the great crash of 1929; within two years, she had risen through the ranks to appear in George White's Scandals of 1931. She nimbly stepped into a lead role for the movie version when it followed in 1934, and delivered "Nasty Man" with an ease and confidence that belied the fact she was still only 19. The Complete Arc & Brunswick Sides, a Collectors' Choice disc, ranges across only three short years in the career of Alice Faye, but does include her Scandals debut and 18 other sides from mid-'30s shows. With the exception of "This Year's Kisses" and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" (two Irving Berlin songs from 1937's On the Avenue), nearly all of these failed the test of time, but Faye delivers each of them with an ebullient grace that dates well. ~ John Bush
She was one of the brightest and most beautiful stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals, so it's little wonder that most Alice Faye collections to date have concentrated almost exclusively on her soundtrack recordings. But Alice was a recording star, too, and this collection features recordings for the ARC, Brunswick and associated labels dating from 1934 to 1937, which happens to be about the time Alice was at the peak of her popularity, before her clashes with Fox studio chief Darryl Zanuck caused her to leave the public eye altogether.
Recorded between 1934 & 1937.
Personnel includes: Alice Faye (vocals); Frddie Martin & His Orchestra; Cy Feuer & His Orchestra.

Complete Arc & Brunswick Sides album
$12.05 When one applies for a job, sometimes the response is that you're overqualified. The same may be the case for Peisha McPhee. Her classically trained, strong, clear voice of operatic proportions doesn't always fit well with the songs on the play list, songs that require somewhat more vocal dynamics than McPhee gives. Trying hard as she can to restrain her powerful voice, she comes on too strong for such pop material as "Ill Wind" and "Little Girl Blue," which require greater subtlety than McPhee provides. At the same time, her voice and demeanor go well with songs that have a strong emotional tug, such as "Who Can I Turn To?" There's also a cleverly contrived dubbed a cappella duet on "Isn't It Romantic." But her forte is in the Gershwin material. "The Man I Love" and the Gershwin medley require the dramatic reading that a formidable voice like McPhee's can give them. Her sole accompaniment for this session is pianist, composer, and voice teacherMel Dangcil. Usually the concern is that the piano player may overwhelm the singer. Not the case here. Dangcil has to work hard not be swamped by the strong voice of McPhee. The result is that matters sometimes get a bit busy. McPhee needs more than just a piano to provide an adequate framework for her exceptional voice. For the pure pleasure of hearing a lovely voice, this album is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

Complete Arc & Brunswick Sides songs
$13.15 David Tolk has always shown a mastery of rich, introspective solo piano, dating back to his 1996 debut. So it should come as no surprise on this, his sixth album and second inspirational collection, that his poignant arrangements of favorite hymns continue to find him among the most talented and focused contemporary pianists. Lush, sophisticated orchestrations evoke vivid musical imagery of natural landscapes and sanctuaries in an acoustic folk setting. The only thing that could enhance his moving George Winston-style sound is the well-produced backing string ensemble that includes master woodwind player Daron Bradford, cellist Steven Sharp ...
