On Six Organs of Admittance's self-titled debut, Ben Chasny lays the foundation for the psychedelic folk-blues that he would continue to explore all the nooks, corners, and crevices of in his subsequent work. The record relies heavily on ambience and noise to give the beautiful acoustic guitar pieces a rough-hewn quality that makes them seem timeless. A single drone lasts the entirety of the first song, "Maria," but "Sum of All Heaven," with its catchy, repeated line "head for the sun," foreshadows the more pop-oriented structures of his 2003 album Compathia -- although with mythological wilderness music wandering for over ten minutes in this case. On first listen, this record seems less caffeine-driven then Chasny has suggested, but upon closer inspection there is a striking uniqueness and fidgety intensity to the particular thread of dark ambience that is woven throughout. Too hypnotic to be scary but simply far too mind-warping to feel the least bit safe (especially on the horror movie-worthy "Invitation to the SR for Supper"), the Six Organs debut makes Bert Jansch-inspired folk-blues into something endlessly alluring but potentially dangerous. It sounds like something that a third album-era Led Zeppelin might have come up with while crouched around a campfire in the English countryside, heads full of Indian music, British folk, and some really potent drugs. ~ Charles Spano

| | Six Organs Of Admittance Compathia CD (2003)
Six Organs Of Admittance album
$11.85 (MP3 Available for Download) With Compathia, Ben Chasny takes Six Organs of Admittance further in the direction of "songs" in the traditional sense (as opposed to extended, largely instrumental, raga-like jams). Assuredly, these aren't pop songs, but they are, most definitely, songs. With Dark Noontide, Six Organs' previous effort, Chasny's folky eastern melodies were balanced by his chant-like moan. But with Compathia, he sings on every track save one, the brief title track (which functions as a beautiful instrumental breather mid-album). His voice is also noticeably pushed forward in the mix, and the songs themselves are less cluttered by percussion and other instruments, further emphasizing Chasny's singing and lyrics. ...

Six Organs Of Admittance music CDs
$12.39 (MP3 Available for Download) If there were one track that completely illustrated the strange and mystical magic that is Six Organs of Admittance, "Manifestation" is it. Issued on vinyl in a numbered, limited edition of 500 in 1999, "Manifestation" is a single 22-minute track. (The other side of the record was an etched drawing of the sun.) Raga-like in its meandering textures and meditative quality, yet utterly different because of its lack of fixed rhythms, Six Organs is Ben Chasny and bandmates Jennifer Juniper Stratford, and percussionist and electronics whiz Utrillo Kushner (from Comets on Fire, of which Chasny is now a full-time member.) The sheer drift and wander of "Manifestation" is dreamy, but not in any ambient way. It is a music that is active, participatory and engaged. It moves through ...

| | Indie Choice 2001 CD (2001)
Six Organs Of Admittance CD music
$6.59 Indie Choice 2001 from Mod Music Records is one of the best sampler collections listeners may have the opportunity to hear. The quality of the production, songwriting, and musicianship is excellent across the board. In the 1980s, Warner Bros. released a couple of compilations that were exciting because of the inclusion of rarities -- Jonathan Richman's appearance on Troublemakers made that double disc memorable, Revenge of the Killer B's had the Pretenders to spice things up, but this indie-label release has no such star power to attract attention to it. That it works so well is commendable. Along with the aforementioned major-label compilations was a release produced by A&R man Steven Leeds, a very interesting Declaration of Independents project featuring Pylon and Robin Lane. Declaration consisted of music that had proven itself via the indie route and found new life on Leeds' label. CMJ also releases collections of current music, but the feeling while spinning Indie Choice 2001 is that this is one of the best collections of music that should be on the radio. "Disappear" by Miss Fortune is a hit. "Out of Sight" by Emily Curtis is a hit. "Disposable" by the Churchills is a mega-hit. This stuff is great. "Disposable" has sparkling power pop guitars, commanding vocals, and hooks galore. This is the song that Fotomaker needed to break out big time. This is the song that Crowded House could have used to follow up "Don't Dream It's Over." The Live at CBGB's and Live at the Rat compilations were vital and important because they documented two scenes as they were bursting at the seams, and many of the players went on to fame or infamy, but this collection, co-sponsored by BMI, Guitar Center, Gibson, and other companies involved in music, is perfect. The only flaw is the packaging -- it looks like it could be a CMJ monthly sampler or generic contest disc, and musically it is much more. You ...
| | Eva Cassidy Imagine CD (2002)
Six Organs Of Admittance MP3 Album
$13.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Following Eva Cassidy's 1996 death from cancer at the age of 33, word-of-mouth popularity in America by way of England led to a number of stellar posthumous releases mixing live and studio recordings. 2002's IMAGINE follows the same path and is no less impressive. Front and center is the late D.C. native's stellar vocal timbre that allowed her to interpret a wide range of songwriters. In the studio, she easily moved from a slinky version of Little Willie John's "Fever" (featuring interesting support on fiddle by brother Dan) to a soaring interpretation of "I Can Only Be Me," a Stevie Wonder composition originally recorded by Keith John for the SCHOOL DAZE soundtrack.
The most notable in-concert performances featured here come from intimate Annapolis venues like the King of France Tavern and defunct Pearl's. These gorgeous solo acoustic readings include the standard ...

Six Organs Of Admittance album
$10.49 (MP3 Available for Download) This intriguing and bizarre album was originally released in 1981, and features Johnny "Guitar" Watson playing all the instruments and singing all the vocal parts. The end result has a surprisingly contemporary 21st century feel, and sounds a bit like Shuggie Otis' similarly lost-solo sessions from a decade earlier, mixing hard blues, jazz, soul and touches of funk into a fascinating hybrid that is remarkably fluid and light on its feet. The whole album is of a piece, but some obvious highlights include "Family Clone," "Ain't Movin'," "Voodoo What You Do," and some mind-blowing vocoder guitar on "Come Dance with Me." Not quite a great lost classic, but it comes pretty darn close. [Also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Steve Leggett

Six Organs Of Admittance CD music
$12.09 Dolly Parton's country-crossover hit "9 to 5" has become a staple of pop radio and karaoke set lists because of its indelible chorus and lyrics that any working stiff can relate to. On this original cast album of the musical (based on the movie), the song gets the Broadway treatment, augmented with extra measures for maximum dramatic effect and multiple singing parts. The effect is not quite the same as hearing Dolly's pert 'n' populist rendition, but it is a vivid reimagining with the same spunky attitude as the original.
The rest of the numbers, written by Parton, are pure cornball, but in most cases delightfully so. Allison Janney strikes just the right brassy tone on "Around Here" and Marc Kudisch and Stephanie Block create heat on the slinky "The Dance o' Death." Megan Hilty has the appropriately theatrical twang for Parton's previously recorded "Backwoods Barbie." "Get Out and Stay Out" is a somewhat ordinary piano ballad fleshed out with Block's powerful and expressive vocals. The rest of the songs seem thin without an accompanying visual spectacle, but for fans of the Broadway show, the album is a solid memento of a fun evening at the theater.
