Despite its title, most of the material on this two-disc "authorized bootleg" isn't really rare, except in the sense that these particular live recordings (taken from concerts recorded between 1993 and 1997) aren't commercially available elsewhere. The songs are mostly fairly familiar Soul Coughing fare: "City of Motors," "Casiotone Nation," "Sugar Free Jazz," etc. But there are some curiosities here, several of them well worth noting: a sharp rendition of "Murder of Lawyers," the hometown shout-out "212," and the loopy Amy Fisher tribute "I'm Living on Baby Food." There's also a brief but charming take on Henry Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk" that should find its way onto a few iPod playlists. Less exciting are a brief blast of "Free Jazz" and a rather desultory performance of "Supra Genius." This version of "Blue Eyed Devil" -- a song that has provided the high point on more than one of the other live Soul Coughing albums -- is given a very fine performance here, but the mix is out of balance; without those mournful uilleann pipes up front, half the song's dark whimsy evaporates. Essential for die-hard fans; maybe less so for those with only a casual interest. ~ Rick Anderson
Recorded live between 1993 & 1997.
Soul Coughing: Mike Doughty (vocals, guitar); Mark De Gli Antoni (keyboards, samples); Sebastian Steinberg (upright bass); Yuval Gabay (drums).

$15.49 By calling this series of live recordings "authorized bootlegs," the folks at Kufala Records wisely keep the aural expectations nice and low, and therefore likely to be exceeded. And indeed, the sound quality is better than you might expect: these recordings were all made at the mixing board, and if the sound ...

Live Rarities album
$14.25 The definitive collection from one of the most influential bands of all time. Contains all their singles & album highlights. Featuring six tracks from their classic, seminal debut album, 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' (1967). 18 tracks in all packaged in a slipcase. Universal. 2003.
Since 1990 or so, every few years someone at whatever corporate entity that happens to own the bulk of the Velvet Underground's catalog decides to take a stab at compiling a single-disc "greatest-hits" album from the band's wildly influential body of work, and in 2006 the British branch of Universal/Polydor presented the latest entry in this ongoing project with the 18-track collection The Very Best of the Velvet Underground. While Polydor's 2005 Gold set is a more thorough and elegantly compiled set (and at two discs it's also a lot longer), this does pretty well by the Velvets' history and gives a clear portrait of their stylistic ...

Live Rarities album
$14.15 With this sparsely yet intricately arranged and fascinating collection by two of the world's greatest mandolin players, Adventure Music continued to live up to its name in the early 2000s as one of the world's top purveyors of world (with a special emphasis on Brazilian) music. Meeting when they were both artists in residence at a mandolin festival in Lunel, France, Mike Marshall and Hamilton de Holanda quickly overcame the obvious cultural and language barriers to realize a shared sense of musical and geographic boundary breaking. Well known for his work with David Grisman, Stéphane Grappelli and Béla Fleck, among others, Marshall taps magically into his bluegrass roots on spirited tracks like "Blackberry Blossom" and Fleck's "Big Country." Yet the real focus of this work is the fun he and de Holanda -- one of the leading figures of Brazilian instrumental music by the age of 30 -- create on brisk Brazilian pieces like the seductive and snappy opening track "Recita de Samba" and "Brejeiro," which blends melodic strumming with percussive tapping on the strings. Their lightning quick repartee and plucky energy on this song and de Holanda's bubbly composition "Pra Siempre" dare the eager listener to keep up. Amid the gleeful madness there are more reflective and heartfelt moments, like de Holanda's "Valsa Em Si," which add some mood variation. Marshall contributes two sweeping pieces of his own in the seven-minute plus epics "Egypt" and exotic (and slightly autobiographical) "Ham & Mike." The set includes a bonus DVD featuring live video footage of three of the songs. ~ Jonathan Widran
