Glen Velez is a master percussionist taking the art of the frame drum in previously unimagined directions. He has played in ensembles with legendary composer Steve Reich and has even had a piece written for him by John Cage. INTERNAL COMBUSTION is Velez's second solo album and gathers drums from Northern Spain, Afghanistan, Morocco, and Ireland. The percussive rhythms create a hypnotic staccato on long tracks like "Pyramid" and "Bodhran." Especially stunning is Velez's ability to bend the sound of the drum long after its initial striking. The precise clarity and intricate finger rolls will appeal to techno afficionados. Aphex Twin has long championed this recording. Velez is also an accomplished throat singer, displaying this talent on "Bendir." This is drumming at its most inspired and ecstatic, making this album a true landmark recording.
Best known for his work with Steve Reich, Glen Velez is widely regarded as one of the masters of the frame drum. His virtuosity is on display throughout Internal Combustion, which focuses almost solely on his improvisational drumming skills (although Layne Redmond contributes his own frame drum and vocals on two tracks). ~ Jason Ankeny

Internal Combustion songs
$16.55 When Frank Zappa died in 1993, he had spent much of his remaining time and energy completing a number of projects before the end finally came. Why the majority of them are still unreleased as of late 2006 is anybody's guess, but perhaps the long awaited release of Trance-Fusion is a good sign. Trance-Fusion is another collection of guitar solos, forming something of a trilogy with the Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar set and Guitar. As FZ fans know, Frank had his favorite vehicles for soloing and careful listening to the albums as a ...

Digitally remastered by Allan Tucker (Foothill Digital, New York, New York).
Every five years since 1986, the corporate custodians of Impulse! have served up batches of Coltrane reissues and unreleased tapes to commemorate a birthday ending in "0" or "5." In the year 2001, which would have been Coltrane's 75th birthday, current label owner Vivendi Universal delivered four single CDs, three of which serve tourists who want to get on the 'Trane for the first time. Standards is probably the least eventful of the lot, offering no unreleased material or particularly enticing packaging. But you won't get shortchanged by the music, which takes us from the first galvanic Impulse! album Africa/Brass ("Greensleeves") through the run of projects by Coltrane's classic quartet of the first half of the '60s (McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones). The tour makes stops at the Village Vanguard for a driving "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," at Birdland for "I Want to Talk About You," a studio date with the dark-honeyed ...
| | Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion CDs (2004) Digipak
Internal Combustion CD music
$41.09 The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. Content-wise, the box doesn't do much to separate itself from the average disco compilation series, leaning heavily on mainstream hits. Each of these 58 songs reached the pop chart, remarkable for a movement with most of its roots planted in clubs that were only a little like Studio 54, populated by marginalized blacks, Latinos, and gays -- a subculture avoided or barely acknowledged by many Saturday Night Fever fans. (The difference is also in the stark contrast between excluded people who were inclusive and included people who were exclusive.) Most of the songs here have appeared on scores of other disco compilations, but those discs are prone to flimsy packaging and poor sound. Distributed by Sony, this box has excellent sound, insightful liner notes, and plenty of bold photographs, all of which make it a helpful disco starter kit. That said, it does rely mostly on radio edits of the songs, always an unfortunate move when dealing with a style of music that thrived on extended, elaborate grooves (granted, a high quantity of tracks on a disc is always appealing to ...
