UNICORN is a 1973 jazz fusion outing by Japanese artist Teruo Nakamura.
Unicorn was bassist Teruo Nakamura's first date as a leader. Recorded and issued in Japan on the legendary Three Blind Mice imprint in 1973, Nakamura had been working in New York since 1964. He'd done a lot of hardscrabble work before 1969 when he landed the gig as bassist in Roy Haynes' fine group of the time. During that year he formed a band with Steve Grossman and Lenny White, who both appear here. This is an interesting date because it is equally divided between very electric fusion tracks and more modal acoustic numbers. Grossman plays on all but one cut; White appears on three. Other players include Alphonse Mouzon on three cuts (instead of White), George Cables on Rhodes, John Miller on acoustic piano, a young percussionist named Ronald Jackson (born Ronald Shannon Jackson), pianist Hubert Eaves III (later of D Train fame), trumpeter Charles Sullivan, vocalist Sandy Hewitt (on Eaves' "Understanding" and "Umma Be Me"). Nakamura plays acoustic upright bass on four tracks and electric on two others. The music is very much of its time, and though it is a session players gig, with rotating lineups, there is plenty of fire here. Grossman had already done his stint with Miles Davis and is in fine form on soprano (especially on the opening title cut), and tenor on John Coltrane's "Some Other Blues." White and Mouzon are both outstanding, so the drum chair is killer throughout, no matter who's playing, and Cables' Rhodes work on the Trane cut and "Derrick's Dance," written by Miller, is stellar. Nakamura, for his part, is more than an able bassist; he leads by guiding the rhythm and not standing out as a soloist. This set has aged very well and was finally issued in the states on CD in 2007 on the Passion Music imprint. ~ Thom Jurek

$10.39 Gloria Lynne was a twenty-something comer when this album was originally recorded in 1958. Since then, she has moved into other areas, notably soul. But at the time these tunes were cut, she was working in the jazzy blues and standards territory that proved quite profitable for Nancy Wilson, Dakota Station, and several ...

Unicorn album
$9.39 THE COLLECTION is a 17-track anthology of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most essential songs, featuring "Sweet Home Alabama," "That Smell," and "Simple Man."
A Lynyrd Skynyrd compilation that doesn't include "Free Bird"? Sounds preposterous, but that's the exact cardinal sin that the 17-track The Collection commits. With such a glut of Skynyrd comps flooding the market place in recent years, the competition is fierce, and this is quite a handicap right off the bat. But what this set does accomplish is spotlight just about every other expected Skynyrd fave, as well as feature a handful of strong tracks that are usually overlooked. Included are the well-known ...
| | 451, Matt Jorgensen + Hope CD (2004)
Unicorn CD music
$14.69 The fourth album from Matt Jorgensen's 451 group continues the line of somewhat traditional modern jazz (if that can be considered a proper name for the style) with a definite forward-thinking aspect built in. The album introduces itself with a groove-laden (and aptly named) "Slinky," powered in part by Phil Sparks' powerful bass, before moving into an interesting cover of a Coldplay song. The first part of the "Hope" series (a trio of title tracks) is a much more ethereal work, making use of some violin riffing and a good bit of synth work. It's certainly off the beaten path from what precedes it. Matt Otto's "Che" has a somewhat more pensive feel, but the energy is released via some lengthy soloing by Mark Taylor and Rob Davis on their respective saxes. "Pack Sack," the first of a trio of Jorgensen originals in a row, is a very hot number, letting the quartet bask in their own speed and strength. "Peacefulness" heads back toward the sparseness and ethereal mood of the earlier "Hope" installment, but with a heavier emphasis on the sax here. Using "Peacefulness" as a nice lead-in reminder of the previous installment, the second installment of "Hope" (actually the third installment, as they're presented intentionally out of order) returns the violin and synths, but fills in the sparseness with a heavier, subtly Bo Diddley-esque beat throughout thanks to Jorgensen. "Sanguine," an original from saxophonist Taylor, is a more relaxed outing with the quartet, but with a somewhat passionate (rather fitting for the title) atmosphere hidden inside. Pianist Ryan Burns also gets a nice shot at displaying his prowess here. A rendition of Mingus' "Fables of Faubus" makes for an interesting mix, but more importantly perhaps shows off the ability of the bandmembers to work together in unusual ways, playing off one another in a manner completely different from the rest ...
