Audio Mixer: Jason Lehning. Recording information: House Of David; Moondog Music, Nashville, TN; Pool Room, Neptune, NJ; the Compound; Wolf Music. Photographers: Ed Rode; John Mazzello. Steve Forbert's first collection of new songs since Evergreen Boy in 2000, Just Like There's Nothin' to It boasts a pair of fine new tunes, the well-observed "I Just Work Here" and the buoyant, poppy "Autumn This Year," both of which show that Forbert can still write a fine song when the gears mesh properly. The album also benefits from Jason Lehning and Marc Muller's production, which is strong and effective without weighing down the melodies, while offering space for guest spots from Edie Brickell and Bruce Springsteen sideman Garry Tallent. Featuring a solid studio band and Forbert in solid (if maturing) voice, Just Like There's Nothin' to It ought to appeal to his core of fans, even if it isn't likely to expand their number. ~ Mark Deming Despite popular belief to the contrary, Steve Forbert has more than one worthwhile album to his credit, but even though there are a few neglected gems in his back catalog, there are also a handful of Forbert discs that offer a couple good songs and a whole bunch of unmemorable ones, and unfortunately 2004's Just Like There's Nothin' to It falls into the latter category. Forbert's first collection of new songs since Evergreen Boy in 2000, Just Like There's Nothin' to It for the most part sounds like the work of a guy who didn't have a whole lot to say when he sat down to work up material; "The Change Song" and "The World Is Full of People" in particular both sound like one-line aphorisms that were somehow ...
| | Phish Undermind CD (2004)
True Ballads
$15.65 What's important to remember is that Phish is the kind of band whose hallmark moments don't happen in the studio, but on-stage where they feel most at home. That said, Undermind continues in the longstanding tradition of almost but not quite capturing the full band on all cylinders. It's the difference between watching an animal in its native habitat and in a caged environment: not quite as exciting, but still a curiosity to respect and observe with interest. Like previous endeavors, the band wastes no time settling into familiar territory, favoring simple song structures and sketches over lengthy instrumental passages (a trait they've deliberately focused upon since Hoist nearly a decade ago). However, Undermind lacks the stylistic diversity that graced many of their earlier albums, opting for a more cohesive sound and tone throughout. Gone are the uptempo, peppy jams and forays into diverse musical waters, replaced here by a band whose members seem to be running on fumes at some points and a full tank of fuel on others. As always, the musicianship remains top-notch, a testament to the high standards of quality Phish have consistently maintained over the past two decades. There are moments of typical Phish brilliance (e.g., opening and closing with an [unintentional?] homage to legendary Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks). Lyrics of surrealist imagery that border on haunting run rampant at times, and the album's closing moment ("Grind") serves as an uncomfortable swan song comparable to McCartney's happy accident at the end of Abbey Road. And while it wasn't publicly confirmed that Undermind was to be their last album (the bandmembers announced mere weeks before its release that this was to be their last record), shades of the band's winter could be subtly interpreted by various song lyrics (especially on "Undermind" and "Crowd Control"). And while the album is still more focused and a much-needed improvement over 2002's Round Room and their finest since Billy Breathes, Undermind is essentially the sound of four musicians growing tired of ...
| | Cornsmoke Musical Philanthropy CD (2001)
True Ballads
$18.95 THIS IS PRIMO STUFF, BABY!!! A new address (he's bought a farm in Pennsylvania), a grand concert piano, rhapsodies, and new CD, "Cornsmoke" has made some interesting changes in his life, and his music! "Musical Philanthropy" is an aural expression of those changes. It is a totally different direction for this philanthropic flute player and his musical mentor, Steve Brown. Brown's keyboard collaborations create a sound, which brings to mind R Carlos Nikai's early work with Peter Kater. It is unlike anything Cornsmoke has produced before. The compositions have a maturity and depth that are, at once, distinctive, and at the same time, familiar. Accessible, but certainly not commonplace. Steve Brown's piano and synthesizers provide a wonderful landscape in which Cornsmoke's Native Amercan flute playing can project powerful musical images. The phrasings are interesting and "fresh". The music is wonderful! Although all the cuts on this album are outstanding, stand-outs include "Landscapes"(the opening cut) "Musician Magician"(A sophisticated blend of magic, piano and flute) and "Cross Culture Blues"(blues? Yes, blues - very interesting!) And here is Cornsmoke's inclusion of "Over the ...
