Atllas, born Lloyd Hopkins, in Denver, Colorado, is the second of three children. His mother moved to Phoenix, Arizona in the early 1990's to pursue better opportunities.Growing up - music wasn't the first love for Atllas. His aspirations were to play in the NBA along side Michael Jordan. It was the early works of rap star Method Man along with young rap and hip hop groups Kriss Kross and Another Bad Creation that served as his early musical influences.While thoughts of college and corporate careers occupied minds of many high school seniors, Atllas recognized that writing and performing his music was what he wanted to pursue. The music group he started at Maryvale High School began booking shows and performing all over the Phoenix metropolitan area.When the group broke up, Atllas had saved enough money to book a little studio time so that he could lay his lyrics and his tracks to disc.Atllas credits his family and his core group of friends aptly named the Phoenix Sector as being the people who made him believe he could be successful as an entertainer. The last time The Missing Planes recorded they were still a two-piece, with Matt Barber on drums and Michele Buono on guitar and vocals. By the time ”In Honor Of Your Departure” was released, they had become a power trio with the addition of their former Georgia Tucker band mate, Tommy Stanford, on bass. “Leaving The Scene” marks the first time the band has recorded with this line up that has been in place since the Fall of 2004. Recording began on a bitter cold day in February of 2007 in a space on Buffalo’s west side that seemed abandoned, or at the very least neglected, until a bunch of musicians decided to use it as their creative space. Fen Ikner was one of those musicians, practicing in that space with his band Knife Crazy as well as using the space as a recording studio. After hearing the work that he did on several other projects, the decision was made to record in that space with Ikner. It was also around that time that Home of the Hits closed its doors for good. That event was part of the inspiration for the title of the record. In the Fall of 2007, the finished tracks were taken to Derek Prellwitz at BFT Tapehouse for mixing. In February of 2008, almost a year to the day that the recording process started, the tracks were taken to Dave St. Onge at The Digital Barn for mastering.When I think about music I often wonder why good old fashioned indie rock has faded away into obscurity. When I mention indie rock I mean the countless number of great bands that popped up everywhere during it’s heyday in the early to late nineties. Artists such as the Pixies, Juliana Hatfield, Sugar, Sebadoh, Versus, Superchunk, Unrest and Velocity Girl blazed a trail of glory around the globe and actually sold some records! When I first listened to this “new sound” I was without a doubt changed forever. Music became powerful, emotional but still fun.
