Collectables' 2003 release Key Largo appears to be a standard Bertie Higgins collection, similar to Collectables' 1996 Golden Classics collection, particularly because it has his big hit, "Key Largo," and is adorned with photos from his 1982 soft rock classic, Just Another Day in Paradise. That's not the case. It's an album about Higgins' first favorite theme, the tropics (the second, of course, being Humphrey Bogart movies), containing some original versions, some re-recordings, some new recordings, and some covers. Of the big Just Another Day in Paradise songs, only "Key Largo" is in its original version; the title track and "Casablanca" are re-recorded, likely in the late '80s/early '90s. The new songs, including covers of the Beach Boys' "Kokomo" and Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville," sound of recent vintage and while they're a little too cleanly produced, they're enjoyable, as is the rest of the record, providing that you go in not expecting a hits collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Hard To Find 45'S On CD, Vol. 6: More Sixties Classics CD (2001)
Key Largo CD music
$13.49 As the title suggests, Hard to Find 45's on CD, Vol. 6: More Sixties Classics collects more of the decade's pop and rock singles, including Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes," the Nashville Teens' "Tobacco Road," Dale & Grace's "I'm Leaving It Up to You," and the Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee." Some of the collection's more obscure highlights include the stereo single versions of Miriam Makeba's "Pata ...
| | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
Key Largo music CDs
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist ...

| | Philly Steps: Phila-La Of Soul & Arctic Records Remixed Hits CD (2004)
Key Largo album
$12.89 Jamie/Guyden Dist. Co. celebrates its 50th anniversary by celebrating the artists and musicians of its past with contemporary remixes by Paul Simpson and Tom Moulton of the labels' classic hits like "Yes, I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason and "Waitin for the Rain" by the Fantastic Johnny C. Paul Simpson, whose remix of Marvin Gaye’s "Lets Get It On" Slate Magazine considered better than the original, has used the original multi-track tapes to provide new takes on such hits as, "Yes, I’m Ready" by Barbara Mason; "I Likes To Do It" by the People’s Choice; and "Love is All Right" and "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles. Tom Moulton adds his magic touch to "Waitin for the Rain" and "Yes, I'm Ready." The album also celebrates the great session musicians of Philadelphia - Ronnie Baker on bass, Norman Harris on guitar and Earl Young on drums, the ...
| | Alexis Korner Kornerstoned: Anthology 1958-1983 CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Key Largo CD music
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) ...
| | Mano Negra Casa Babylon CD (1994)
Key Largo music CDs
$8.85 Manu Chao's road to Clandestino and Proxima Estación: Esperanza begins here with Mano Negra's swan song album. Conceptually, it marks the first use of radio and TV broadcast samples to create sound collages between tracks so the songs emerge like they would if you were station surfing on the car radio. Lyrically, it's the birth of the internationalist Manu Chao, as overt political messages largely replace the previous rebel rocker sentiments. Musically, Mano Negra returns to the manic rhythmic drive of Puta's Fever and ups the reggae, ska, and Latin ante after testing more mainstream rock waters on King of Bongo. But Casa Babylon goes one step beyond Puta's Fever by crashing together different styles and even lyrics in different languages within the songs. So the racehorse title track blends a Latin feel with motor-mouth rapping and blowsy trombone, while "Senor Ma Tanza" starts fast and furious before settling ...

| | Original Syn CDs (2005)
Key Largo album
$15.69 Beyond that, it's hard to say when the material was recorded. "Mallard Way," a solo piano piece by Andrew Jackman, sounds like it was done long after the original Syn dissolved, and while "Illusion" (on disc two) does feature three members of the '60s Syn, it's obviously way too prog rock and slickly produced to be from the '60s themselves. "The Last Performance of the Royal Regimental, Very Victorious and Valiant Band," though written by the Syn's Steve Nardelli and Andrew Jackman and sounding very much like a fruity circa-1967 London pop production, is sung by one Denny Ward, with Jackman being the only musician from the Syn who plays on the track. "Mr. White's White Flying Machine" is credited to "Ayshea with the Syn" and is apparently the Syn backing a female singer on a psych pop tune. And "Cadillac Dreams" is a murky recording credited to "Nasquijack" (Nardelli, Squire, and Jackman) on which only vocals and a piano can be heard. At least "Merry-Go-Round" is definitely the '60s Syn taken from an acetate transfer, though of an early lineup predating Pete Banks' time in the band.
Focusing on the music, while "14 Hour Technicolor Dream" and "Grounded" are among the finest obscure '60s British psychedelic and mod singles, nothing else here comes close to being as interesting. "Merry-Go-Round" is okay soul-mod, and the two Selfs numbers include a generic early British Invasion-style original ("Love You") and a passable cover of the Who's "I Can't Explain." But on the whole, it's only for very serious '60s British rock/Yes fans looking to fill in some of the back story of a band that seemed to have great potential, but only came close to fulfilling it on those "14 Hour Technicolor Dream" and "Grounded" tracks. More of the back story is filled in by the 45-minute interview (conducted in 2004) about the Syn with Squire and Nardelli that takes up most of disc two, as well as the 20-page booklet of photos and liner booklets, all enclosed in a DVD-sized case. With so much effort invested in such handsome packaging, however, why not go to the trouble of providing more specific details about the actual tracks? ~ Richie Unterberger
