On Phantoms, her third album as leader, saxophonist, and composer, Virginia Mayhew demonstrates that she is not only an exciting writer and skillful arranger, but also that she can take the most tired standards and turn them into brand-new musical adventures. Aided by her longstanding quartet , consisting of the exquisite trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, bassist Harvie S. (a.k.a. Harvie Swartz), and drummer Allison Miller, Mayhew bops, bounces, and floats through a wide-ranging program of originals, standards, and modern compositions by such eminent names as Steve Swallow ("Babble On") and Kenny Barron ("Phantoms"). Piano-less quartets are always treading a thin line between salutary freedom and potential harmonic chaos, but it is Mayhew's particular strength to be able to hold this group together almost telepathically, even when taking unusual liberties with the material -- like laying the changes to Cole Porter's "I Love You" over a homemade 7/8 rhythmic framework, or switching the melodic accents around on Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-ning" until it sounds almost like a different tune altogether. Swartz takes a particularly nice solo turn on "Monterey Blues," a Mayhew original, but it's Jensen that continually catches your ear on her solos and on the beautifully constructed duo passages she shares with Mayhew. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Phantoms album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" ...
| | Linda Ronstadt Hummin' To Myself CD (2004)
Phantoms CD music
$14.39 Successful careers that stretch over multiple decades are hardly accidents. For interpretive singers, the keys are juggling genres, selecting appropriate material, and working with compassionate collaborators. Linda Ronstadt, who scored her first hit in 1968, gets high marks in all these categories, and 2004's HUMMIN' TO MYSELF, an album of standards, is no exception. On the gentle swing of "Blue Prelude," the brassy declarations of "Never Will I Marry," and the tongue-in-cheek pathos of "Miss Otis ...

| | Planet Jazz In Orbit CD (2006)
Phantoms album
$13.75 The jazz sextet Planet Jazz (no relation to the club/dance band that used the same name) was founded by drummer Johnny Ellis, who contributed several of the compositions heard on this CD but died in 1999, long before the recording session. This strong bop-oriented group is fronted by tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart and trumpeter/flügelhornist Joe Magnarelli, with pianist Spike Wilner, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Neal Miner, and drummer Joe Strasser. Stewart and Magnarelli kick each other into high gear trading fours in Ellis' lively "Buttermoose." Another Ellis work, "The Cow Is Now," is a slightly quirky jazz waltz. Their choice of Charlie Shavers' neglected "Dawn on the Desert" is inspired, with Wilner giving it a Latin flavor and adding a slightly ominous tinge. He also scored Hampton Hawes' "Sonora," which fuels some of the most inspired solos of the date, accompanied by a breezy Latin backbeat. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composed "Dual Highway" as a blues vehicle for alto sax great Johnny Hodges, though their recording wasn't issued until well after the deaths of all three musicians. Planet Jazz do a nice job utilizing this unjust obscurity ...

| | Phil Porter Road CD (2008)
Phantoms album
$25.35 Phil Porter is a well known local gospel singer songwriter who has developed his gift of music as a writer, singer, and musician over the last thirty years in Nova Scotia and beyond. He writes what he knows; songs that touch the heart and soul of the audience and are often based on people he has met, experiences he has had, and the Bible stories he has known since childhood. Phil performs at churches, evangelistic meetings, and charity events whenever his busy schedule permits. In addition to his solo performances, he is the director and accompanist for the Dartmouth Men’s Choir and the pianist for both Foundation Baptist and Forest Hills Fellowship Baptist Churches.Phil began his musical journey, like most young musicians, by taking piano lessons from a local teacher. One year later, after moving and changing teachers, he was told he would never be able to play the piano because he was not applying himself. He stopped taking lessons by “mutual agreement” and a year later he became the pianist in the church his former teacher attended. Since those early days Phil’s talent has continued to grow as he has played and sung in churches, groups, and on his own.His most recent performance venues have included churches in Columbia, Missouri; Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and along Nova Scotia’s south shore.Phil has recently expanded his musical experience by beginning to record a demo album to showcase his talent, and is working toward ...
