Mark Everett, the Eels mastermind commonly known simply as E, has been around the block enough to know how to distill his craft to its essence. That's just what he does on SHOOTENANNY, having previously released six Eels albums and two as A Man Called E. He's as unapologetically misery-laden as ever, of course, but we wouldn't have him any other way. Even when he makes a romantic entreaty, all he can ultimately offer to the object of his affection is the "Love of the Loveless."
What's most remarkable is the way he's pared things down production-wise. For an artist known as a wizard of popcraft in terms of both writing and arrangements, E keeps things surprisingly spare and simple throughout the album. The bulk of the songs, while retaining an undeniable pop sensibility, are musically straightforward pop-rock romps with little ornamentation and few quirky sonic touches. Uncomplicated guitar riffs and keyboard patterns power these directly emotive compositions. Did we mention that he was still miserable? E revels ironically in that emotion on the aptly titled "Agony," where he muses "maybe I need some psychiatric help" over a torturous 6/8 groove. SHOOTENANNY offers music and emotions pared to the bone, but it'll fill you up in due course.

Rolling Stone (6/12/03, p.88) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...Breezy melodies and fuzzy guitar-and-keyboard arrangements that sound built for a summer night's drive..." Entertainment Weekly (6/6/03, p.78) - "...It offers the Eels' usual twisted take on California pop-rock, with more prominent blues voicings to complement the scrappy guitars and narcotized atmospherics..." Uncut (6/03, p.119) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Even the apocalyptic LA of 'Rock Hard Times' has energy, part of a 21st century alienated soul album that slips the Eels back into your heart..." Magnet (6-7/03, p.91) - "...[Features] strutting blues [and] orchestral bliss-pop..." CMJ (5/19/03, p.8) - "...SHOOTENANNY! is a seemingly effortless day-in-the-life account of...just about anyone....The Eels make everything sound easy..." Shootenanny! Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) E has talent Some of you Eels fans may have been disappointed with this album. Just some information: this album was done in three weeks. 10 days of writing, about a week of recording and a week of mixing. Sure it isn't eels' best album, but seeing that it was all done in 3 weeks, its damn impressive. It just shows the talent and experience of E. Eels, keep on truckin'. Disappointing eels are one of my favourite bands. but that status is gradually being lost everytime they bring out a new album. there is absolutely so doubt that the quality of their releases are deteriorating by the album and indeed by the single. there are a couple of tracks that save this album from despair "saturday morning" and "lone wolf". however the rest of it is poor and my advice to eels is to give up now because i hate to think howbad the next album is going to be. and my advice to you is to buy their earlier stuff rather than this - beautiful freak and electro-shock blues are their best albums. overall (sorry eels)i am disappointed :( Submitted by Joe (An Odd Location) Was This Review Helpful? Great!!!!! this is eels fifth album (E's seventh) and its not the best but its better than souljacker (the most recent one before it). saturday morning and lone wolf are the best tracks. Its a good album, BUY IT!!!! Submitted by josemorrisinio (Bristol, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Eels hit the jackpot again Whilst I found Souljacker a somewhat disapointing release from the eels... Shootenanny! has bought us back to life again. Sure, This record is far from the days of beautiful freak, but I personally think Shootenanny brakes another mold for the eels. It's a very raw album, no many samples, and very feel good. Many songs sounding like the beatles, mixed with beck, and then that something special thrown in by The Eels themselves.
Many avid fans who bought and loved E's Beautiful Toyshop will find Dirty Girl a reminder of that album. Saturday Morning is the eels as you've never heard them before, and Lone wolf and Love of the Loveless is excellent. Each Eels album contains something special... even souljacker... But with Shootenanny... your not so sure what makes it what it is... I prefer to see it as Mark Oliver Everitt making magic with Butch, Lisa Germano and Kool G murder once again.

$27.95 As the master of wistful, melancholic love songs, Paul Williams penned major hits for The Carpenters ("We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days And Mondays"), Helen Reddy ("You And Me Against The World") and Three Dog Night ("An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Out In The Country"). Williams also recorded an incredible run of albums as a performer in his own right. In collaboration with fellow writers Roger Nichols and Kenny Ascher, Williams imbued his songs with uncluttered arrangements, enticing melodies and introspective lyrics, making many of them pop standards in the process. For this outstanding, 23-track, multi-label collection, Raven has culled the best tracks from his 1970s albums for the Reprise, A&M and Portrait labels, including his own versions of all the big hits. In addition there's a song from the film Phantom Of The Paradise ("The Hell Of It") plus his version of the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe-winning Barbra Streisand hit "Evergreen" (originally from A Star Is Born). Amazing stuff. Raven. 2006.
Paul Williams was one of the biggest stars of the '70s, the kind of celebrity who was famous for being famous, as so many guest hosts of The Muppet Show were, and he authored such standards as "An Old Fashioned Love Song," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Rainy Days and ...
