| | Collin Raye Twenty Years And Change CD (2005)
Doug Stone
$5.75 It's been a long time between new studio albums from Collin Raye. His last was in October of 2001, when Can't Back Down closed out his contract with Epic Records. Four years later, he's on an independent -- Aspirion, which is distributed by Navarre -- and has his long-awaited collection of new material in Twenty Years and Change. Unlike a lot of artists who return to independent status, Raye has not stripped down his sound or returned to his roots -- although it could be argued that the slick, ballad-heavy country-pop on this album is indeed his roots, since that's what gave him his biggest hits and sustained popularity. Although there's a couple of lively moments here, such as the winning "Hurricane Jane," this is a calm, gentle, polished record that sounds as if it could have fit onto adult contemporary pop stations in the mid-'90s; after all, he does cover Survivor's power ballad "The Search Is Over." Which doesn't make it a bad listen -- it's professionally made and well performed by Raye, who sounds a bit older but still in good voice -- but it is a little samey and safe, sometimes verging on background music. That may not make for a particularly engaging ...

$14.75 ShocoreDevil Rock DiscoSo what's the name mean? Does it have some cosmic or far eastern connotation?? Nah, not really. It's taken from the nickname for Terry (sho as in sho 'nuf)) Murray and Cory (Core, misspelling courtesy of a local rock writer) White. If any meaning or significance need be attached, it's probably safe to say the name was derived from the creative and collaborative efforts of these two guys.Up to now, White was best known as the front man for defunct Vancouver band DDT. Lessons hard learned but education worth the effort is the description Cory ascribes to his four years and two records with those guys. Following his departure from that band, he took some time off, wrote a lot of new songs and quickly found that he really missed recording and touring. Armed with some new material and a renewed determination, he quickly hooked up with Terry who had been working on tracks for other bands and doing production at Profile and some of the other Vancouver studios. Things clicked creatively, the songs came together amazingly well, and they began bringing in musicians to round out the project. The more they worked, the better it got and over the span of about 5 months, they recorded Devil Rock Disco, a 10 song cd that critics are calling "alternative to alternative rock, with a touch of rap and enough energy to stave off California's dilemma". The reaction to the band and the cd has been nothing short of incredible! The track Bonecracker lit up phones at CFOX where it's been top 10 for 7 weeks, 2 of those at #1, and was just added at Vancouver's XFM following heavy phone requests. CFOX online has gotten strong requests from Canadian and US listeners for the track as well. Bonecracker also grabbed the attention of Microsoft and the song is being used in the XBOX series. And if that's not enough, another track High School Punk has been picked up for the Jet Boy film soundtrack due out later this year. Well, that's not enough. Bonecracker, High School Punk and Legendary Camaro just got picked up for upcoming episodes of The Outer Limits.Shocore just returned from a cross Canada tour with The Headstones and just performed at the Microsoft XBOX Launch Event in Toronto late last year, a result of "Bonecracker" being included on the compilation album with some of the biggest international rock artists. The new year ...

| | Orangey CD (2007) (Import)
Doug Stone
$17.99 Orangey have been active in Tokyo since the early 90's veering from shoe-gazing dreamy pop to the mid-90's return to 60's / 70's sharp song writing and in the new millenium have incorporated a blend of electro-pop with hip hop rap. Brief Historyonix: Steve, Akemi and former Rei (founders of Orangey) were born in a swimming pool of enthusiasm for eclectic music. Steve (British/Hungarian) had his grounding in a minimalist electro pop band back in the UK; writing, arranging and producing artists from the age of 19. Two tracks of his appeared on a South London compilation (via PINNACLE) and he wrote songs and instrumentals for film, Modern Dance, and Fringe Theatre. One of his first songs utilised the first available home-use Sampler, for UK engineer Paul Gomersall (Echo and The Bunnymen, George Michael, Kate Bush, ZTT artists, Genesis etc.) which featured for a U.K. Electronic music magazine (Paul, now producing in Australia is once again collaborating with Steve on Orangey tracks). After a move to Japan, Steve worked as a session vocalist/guitarist for PITT INN, Tokyo. Singing & lyricist on TV commercials for SHISEIDO, XEROX etc. and on arrangements for single releases via TOKUMA JAPAN. Later in 1992 Steve met the witty and perceptive: AKEMI (Japanese) who played bass in her high school band and showed a fondness for post-punk artists and the melodic pop tradition of The Beatles,The Kinks etc. while being quite an accomplished Blues pianist. Most recently TONY (American) with his liking for 80's British bands such as The Cure and Human League, has joined the duo providing chorus vocals and rap (while teaching Hip hop dance in his spare time.) For over a decade, Orangey ...
