Initial pressings of the 2003 Denon version of WHAT'S INSIDE contain a bonus DVD featuring videos of "Everyday Boy" and "Recommend My Love"
One of Joan Armatrading's darkest and most sonically adventurous albums, 1995's WHAT'S INSIDE--her first album for RCA after a 22-year association with A&M--finds the singer/songwriter in a more contemplative mood without sacrificing the power and emotion of her earlier work. Songs like "In Your Eyes,"--the sort of song Armatrading did for 15 years before Tracy Chapman, her vocal doppelganger, achieved tremendous commercial and critical acclaim for doing the exact same thing--the gentle, acoustic "Back of the Road," the jazzy, vibes-laden "Everyday Boy," and the archetypally Armatradingesque "Shapes and Sizes" are all excellent and heartfelt. The Kronos Quartet and the Memphis Horns both guest, though unfortunately not on the same songs.
This limited edition CD/DVD combo features videos of 2 of Joan's most successful tracks, along with a 12-song audio CD.
Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Personnel: Joan Armatrading (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Hojah Farah (acoustic guitar); BJ Cole (slide guitar); Boz Burrell (penny whistle); Peter Robinson, Greg Phillinganes, Benmont Tench, Todd Cochran (keyboards); Tony Levin, Darryl Jones (bass); Manu Katche (drums); Alex Acuna (percussion); Terry Evans, K. La, Ray Williams, Willie Green, Jr. (background vocals); The London Metropolitan Orchestra; Kronos Quartet; Memphis Horns.Entertainment Weekly (11/3/95, p.65) - "On her 14th album in 21 years, the West Indian-born singer-songwriter proves why she still deserves an audience. Moving easily from light jazz to reggae to R&B/funk and ballads, she uses her calm, rosewood voice to ferret out hidden emotions..." - Rating: B+ Dirty Linen (2-3/96, p.93) - "...It starts out with "In Your Eyes", a tender ethereal love song in which the deep-voiced Armatrading whispers over a bed of throbbing synthesizers....She returns to her strengths on the second song...where Armatrading belts it out...". What's Inside album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. "Rolling Moon" captures a mood of shambling joy, its simple, repeated keyboard riff sounding like a distant caravan crossing New Zealand's ...
| | Joan Armatrading Lovers Speak CD (2003)
What's Inside CD music
$11.89 When an artist releases something as profoundly moving as Lovers Speak, critical acumen doesn't mean a damned thing. Joan Armatrading's first album proper in five years is a startling testament of artistic integrity, searing emotional honesty, and musical accessibility and sophistication that is literally unmatched by anything on the current musical scene. In fact, the only comparable album from 2003 is Annie Lennox's Bare. But where the latter is an album of confessions and exorcism, Lovers Speak is an unflinching look at the language of love from all sides. It is an investigation into the experience of love, its languishing and loss, and the redemption it is capable of rewarding to those who persevere and refine themselves through heartache and acceptance and tolerance. For starters, Armatrading, who has been known to consort with producers ...

| | Killing Floor CD (1995) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
What's Inside songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and killer sound. This is a raw, immediate, overdriven, psychedelic blues record that offers an interesting historical counterpoint to the immediate impact of Page and Plant and Co., but it also offers a great contrast to the ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
What's Inside album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, ...

What's Inside songs
$14.15 The first solo album by Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the Foo Fighters, is to the Foo Fighters what Dave Grohl's first Foo Fighters album was to Nirvana -- an album by a drummer turned songwriter that doesn't wander far off the reservation, staying within the boundaries of his main gig but offering a distinctively, charmingly friendly spin on his day job. There's no mistaking that Hawkins is part of the Foo Fighters -- he relies on the propulsive, hooky hard rock that's Grohl's stock in trade, yet he never sounds exactly like Grohl himself. He has a lighter touch, and his eponymous debut with his backing band, the Coattail Riders, has a very Californian feel. It's bright and sunny, ...
