THIS SIDE won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

"Smoothie Song" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.

When they first made their nationwide splash with their 2000 debut album, teen bluegrass group Nickel Creek were one of the biggest mainstream crossovers since their producer/mentor Alison Krauss, successfully modernizing their tradition-conscious genre. The follow-up THIS SIDE finds the trio largely moving away from bluegrass altogether, though retaining the same spare acoustic instrumentation. A straight-ahead cover of alt-rock legends Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger" offers the first clue that this isn't exactly Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys. Nickel Creek doesn't need to look to outside material for genre exploration, though. "Green and Gray" seems to bear a debt to the Dave Matthews Band (or at least John Mayer), while "Should've Known Better" is in a hip-hop-inflected R&B mode, and the title track could be a gentler moment from the archives of Tonic or Third Eye Blind. There are a few tracks sprinkled throughout the album that nod to the band's beginnings, and in these (particularly the evocative version of the traditional "House Carpenter" and the sprightly instrumental opener "Smoothie Song") a possible future for bluegrass may be glimpsed.

Recorded at Emerald Sound, Seventeen Grand, The Brown Cloud Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

Nickel Creek: Chris Thile (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin); Sean Watkins (vocals, guitar); Sara Watkins (vocals, fiddle, strings).

Additional personnel: Byron House (acoustic bass); Edgar Meyer (arco bass).Entertainment Weekly (8/23/02, pp.140-1) - "...A thoughtful attempt to turn away from tradition - to make nothing less than a bluegrass art record..." - Rating: B
Q (12/02, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The playing here is spot on, the arrangements and harmonies inventive..."
Uncut (1/03, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Gloriously unaffected....THIS SIDE expands on their intricate acoustic shanties by occasionally plugging in the amps and stretching bluegrass, indie and folk over a thrillingly realized canvas..."
Mojo (Publisher) (12/02, p.115) - "...Thirteen tracks, lucky for all who get to listen..."

5 stars A must have for SACD fans!
This CD is one of the best SACD mixes I have heard. Puts the band right in my living room. The clarity is remarkable. Truly a must have for SACD fans.

5 stars Audiophile sound + Wonderful Music
I bought this SACD because it appears on several listings of excellent 5.1 recordings. It is that, with ambient surround sound as well as discrete surround sounds. It is also very interesting, satisfying music...Thiles songs in particular are moving in a strange way. Even though the instrumentation seems to imply "bluegrass", IMHO this music is something different. Does anyone remember the Incredible String Band? Nickel Creek reminds me of that group.

5 stars If you like 'em recorded, see 'em live!
Two friends and I saw them at "The Pageant" in St. Louis, MO and I lost count of how many time their music gave me goosebumps. It is eerie and haunting yet warm and comforting all at the same time. Nickel Creek are wonderful musicians whose music will change your mood, your day and possibly even change you...for the better. A must have for you...yes you!!

Bigger Piece Of The Sky
Robert Earl Keen Bigger Piece Of The Sky   (1993)

This Side CD music
Super Audio CD (Playable only on SACD-capable players) $13.69  Audio Samples
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Arguably his finest record, Robert Earl Keen's A Bigger Piece of Sky is a transitional album for him -- he begins to evolve out of the terrain of his organic small-town Texas songwriting comfort zone and to walk the knife's edge between a more expansive meld of roots rock, honky tonk country, and Western back-porch folk. Keen is an inheritor of that particular brand of songwriting that Jerry Jeff Walker established in the 1970s, where the good times and wandering life of a minstrel are juxtaposed against a small-town view of a confounding world. Produced with crisp attention to detail by Garry Velletri, Keen's songs observe the smaller details in a private life, whether that life remains in the same place mentally and physically or, because of some mercurial and difficult-to-place event, slips over the line into forbidden territory. Both kinds of songs are here. The album opens slowly with "So I Can Take My Rest." This is Keen at his very best. He records loneliness, uncertainty, and the vulnerability of a man at his limit, one who seeks only simple solace ...

At Last
Lauren White At Last CD  (2007) Sacd Hybrid

This Side songs
CD $20.25  Audio Samples
Lauren White is one of a seemingly increasing number of vocalists attempting to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful vocalist Norah Jones. Though White has got some jazz chops and a pleasing voice, her debut CD is rather inconsistent, covering standards, pop songs, country and originals. The best tracks feature her with pianist Bill Cunliffe (who knows a thing or two about accompanying singers), while bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Mark Ferber lay a solid foundation throughout the album. "My One and Only" is not one of the Gershwin brothers' well known tunes, but White makes the most of this slinky opener. She doesn't seem to appreciate the humor in "Mack the Knife" as much as Ella Fitzgerald, so it comes off a little tame. Better is the unusual setting of "My Funny Valentine," sung with a sense of drama and adding a lush solo by tenor saxophonist Rickey Woodard. But then problems start to appear. Guitarist Anthony Wilson's dreary arrangement of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" and Joe Bagg's lackluster organ do absolutely nothing for this normally ...
