Steppin To Jazz album
$12.35 Maysa showed a lot of promise on this self-titled debut album, which recalls the late-'70s and early-'80s output of soul divas like Chaka Khan, Alicia Myers and Phyllis Hyman, and sometimes shows quiet storm leanings. Most of the songs that the big-voiced, expressive Maysa turns her attention to are straight-up R&B, although she ventures into jazz fusion territory when she scats her way through the Brazilian-influenced "J.F.S." (which is the type of song that wouldn't have been out of place on a Flora Purim, Raul DeSouza or George Duke album of the '70s). At a time when a lot of R&B recordings were entirely electronic, Maysa's producers favor a sleek yet fairly organic approach and combine keyboards with real bass, real guitar, real drums and real horns. Ranging from decent to excellent, Maysa enjoyed some airplay on NAC stations but didn't make the singer a huge name in the R&B world. Nonetheless, this CD is worth searching for if ...
| | Lenny White Streamline CD (1978)
Steppin To Jazz CD music
$9.69 Lenny White's 1977 recording The Adventures of Astral Pirates was an incredibly tough act to follow -- so tough, in fact, that anything less than a five-star gem was likely to seem a bit disappointing. Streamline, the 1978 LP that came right after The Adventures of Astral Pirates, isn't a five-star gem, but it isn't bad either. Although not in a class with The Adventures of Astral Pirates or 1975's Venusian Summer, let alone White's work with Return to Forever, Streamline is a generally decent, if mildly uneven, collection of instrumental jazz fusion and R&B vocal numbers. While this album (which White produced with Earth, Wind & Fire keyboardist Larry Dunn) isn't as R&B-oriented ...

| | Miles Davis Evolution Of The Groove CD (2007) Digipak; Extended Play
Steppin To Jazz album
$6.09 Given the progressive trajectory of Miles Davis's career, and his genre-smashing tendencies, it's likely that if Miles Davis were alive today he'd be incorporating electronica and hip-hop into his jazz palette. The remix project EVOLUTION OF THE GROOVE imagines Miles in a contemporary context, taking classic Miles tracks and treating them with new production, beats, and overdubs from guest musicians including Nas, Carlos Santana, and others.
Nas's guest rap on "Freedom Jazz Dance" works surprisingly well, proving once again that Miles's music is so fluid and forward-thinking that it's adaptable to nearly any context. Elsewhere, Santana brings his soulful guitar work to "It's About ...

| | Cipher System Central Tunnel Eight CD (2004)
Steppin To Jazz CD music
$9.79 When you're dealing with extreme metal -- that is, death metal, grindcore, black metal, metalcore and deathcore -- there are different extreme vocal styles to be aware of. Death metal is known for a deep growl, black metal is known for a rasp, and metalcore is known for tortured screaming. One of the noteworthy things about Central Tunnel Eight is the way Sweden's Cipher System combines a death metal/black metal foundation with a metalcore vocal style. Lead singer Daniel Schöldström would be quite appropriate for a metalcore band; he would fit right in if Hatebreed, Every Time I Die, Brick Bath, NDE or Throwdown wanted to feature him. Schöldström, in fact, is so metalcore-sounding that some might conclude that Central Tunnel Eight is metalcore, but take away Schöldström's screaming vocals and you're left with a typical death metal/black metal ...
| | Eightball Almost Famous CD (2001)
Steppin To Jazz music CDs
$13.19 8Ball may be best known for his collaborations with MJG, but he's certainly no slouch when left to his own devices, as evidenced by ALMOST FAMOUS. The opening cut "Thorn" is something of a mission statement, where 8Ball pledges to "keep it hardcore" while explaining that anyone who covets his position will first have to see all the things he's seen, describing himself as a thorn on a rosebush. Over a syncopated, Latin-tinged beat on "No Sellout" (which features a guest appearance by Koncrete), 8Ball ...
