Picking up where 2000's celebrated SOPHTWARE SLUMP left off, SUMDAY continues to mine that particular vein of spacey, '60s-influenced indie rock practiced by the likes of the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, et al. That pleasantly stoned, slightly detached, wonder-of-it-all feeling is certainly present throughout the album. A mildly bemused attitude towards the world is at the center of the lyrical excursions, married to accessible, pure-pop moves.
The debatable alt-country flavor that some heard on SLUMP is essentially absent here, with the balance tipped more in favor of that classic straight-eighths indie guitar style married to some gorgeous atmospheric production touches and some first-class melodic songwriting. With the combination of heavenly harmonies, hooky melodies, and kooky electronic effects, one is tempted to imagine what might have happened if the Electric Light Orchestra started out in the mid-'90s in a basement with a four-track and went on from there.
Grandaddy: Jason Lytle (vocals, guitar); Burtch, Dryden, Fairchild, Garcia.
Audio Mixer: Michael Brauer.
Unknown Contributor Roles: Garcia; Fairchild.

A different direction?... Grandaddy varies their sound slightly with each release, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. This album wasn't exactly what I would have expected after The Sophtware Slump (2000), however it grew on me considerably. I will continue to follow this band because they have a demiurgic sound compared to anything in mainstream music. Submitted by Rob (Batesburg-Leesville, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What happened?!? Grandaddy provides a much more accessable album, which, sadly, falls short of their last release, Sophtware Slump.
Early Gradaddy had a unpolished charm, which is now replaced by studio pop conciseness on Sumday. Grandaddy have essessentially become what they parodied on tracks like "Alan Parsons In a Winter Wonderland".
But, for those of you who need a Grandaddy fix, despite the less sincere song writing, you will enjoy this album none the less. Submitted by a reviewer (Beijing, PR China) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best New Album in a long time I heard this while browsing in a Tower Records in San Francisco in July. Wow. What a great album. Great guitar chords with a slightly soft vocal style (almost like Bob Welch). Musically - very well written. Favorites inclue track # 2 "I'm on Standby", track 4, "The Group who Couldn't Say", and especailly track number 5, "Off on Yer Merry Way". But there is more. Really glad I got this record. $19.99 ROBERT GORDON WITH LINK WRAY/FRESH FISH SPECIALS was originally released as 2 seperate LPs. The single compact disc contains 9 additional tracks that did not appear on the original albums.
Lester Bangs once described Robert Gordon as looking as if he belonged in a natural history museum identified as "Bopcatus Americanus," and while his first album wasn't the one that inspired the comment, the vintage duds and greased-up pompadour he sports on the front cover would have done any pop-culture archeologist proud. While Gordon first hit the New York City rock scene as a proto-punk with Tuff Darts, when he struck out on his own in 1977 he was one of America's first rockabilly revivalists, covering the likes of Eddie Cochran, Billy Lee Riley, and Carl Perkins as if he was waiting for Sam Phillips to stop by and discover him. For this album, Gordon paired up with legendary guitarist Link Wray, and the result was a solid and evocative tribute to first-era rock & roll, though with a few details turned around. Wray was never really a rockabilly player, and while he brings plenty of fire and gritty presence to these sessions, the "Rumble" man sometimes seems to be ...
