Tennessee Ernie Ford's Greatest Hits contains ten of the country singer's well-known songs originally recorded for Capitol in the early to mid-'50s, including "Mule Train," "Shotgun Boogie," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," and his biggest hit from 1955, "Sixteen Tons." The emphasis is on Cousin Ernie's country boogie tracks rather than the religious material he is also well known for. The casual listener will be pleased with the choice of material, but the collector who wants more should search the used bins for the unfortunately deleted Razor & Tie two-disc set The Ultimate Collection (1949-1965). ~ Al Campbell

This 35-track anthology contains all of R&B diva Whitney Houston's hit singles and a selection of remixes.
It should come as no surprise that a woman who counts Dionne Warwick as a cousin, Aretha Franklin as a family friend, and whose mother was a legendary session and gospel singer, became a phenomenally successful R&B act. Buena Vista may have released this brief domestic anthology in reaction to the proliferation of Annette bootlegs in the years since the box set Annette: A Musical Reunion With America's Girl Next Door went out of print. Although San Francisco-based, Jeffrey Halford makes music that is seeped in the South. It's a sound forged from roots rock and country blues, with a hint of gospel and folk. The easy-flowing "Oh, Susanna" begins with a brief guitar nod to the same-named traditional tune and then proceeds to tell a Civil War-set narrative from a Confederate soldier's perspective, which refers to Ambrose Bierce's short story Incident at Owl Creek Bridge. "Memphis," meanwhile, is a rousing tribute to that Tennessee town complete with shout-outs to Al Green, B.B. King, and the King, Elvis. Throughout the record, Halford displays a sharp storytelling eye. The hobo ode "Straight Razor" and the panoramic tale of Central California, "Black Gold," stand out as particularly evocative, moving songs. Sometimes his societal critiques verge on becoming heavy-handed; both the anti-gun "."44" and the Native American history lesson "Crazy Horse" drive home their points a bit too hard. "Satchel's Fastball," however, nicely injects an undercurrent of '50s racial politics into this Satchel Paige-centered baseball story. But for all of his gritty tales, Halford also adeptly displays a softer side. "Radio Flyer," for example, beautifully tells its story of a parent talking lovingly about his young child. This poignant tune recalls Bring the Family-era John Hiatt and the similarities continue in Halford's Southern soulful vocals and his rootsy rock sound. Twenty-some-years after he made his final recordings, a Henry Flynt revival of sorts began in the early "aughts" with a series of releases on Locust. Purified by the Fire continues the label's on-going campaign to bring the to light the recordings of this hard-to-classify musician and thinker who has been called both a visionary and a pretender -- and it will likely do little to settle the debate. Purified presents a single extended track, nearly 42-minutes-long, recorded in late 1981 with Flynt on electric violin and C.C. Hennix on pandit pran nath tambura. Indian music purists will no doubt be horrified, or perhaps merely amused, by Flynt's brand of hillbilly raga. But, of course, he's not even trying to play by the book. However, Purified does start out conservatively enough: the tambura meditatively humming along and Flynt playing in a calm, contemplative mode.
