2003 reissue of the Scandinavian dark metal act's 1992 album features six tracks plus an exclusive multimedia enhanced interview with the band (Chapter 2), packaged in a digipak. Peaceville.
Heavy metal has always championed the darker things in life, but whatever they might say in their interviews, most bands are really just mugging for the press, fronting a fantasy image for the benefit of their impressionable young fans. But all bets are off when it comes to the infamous Norwegian black metal scene, where in the early '90s popular bands like Mayhem, Emperor, and Burzum saw key members charged with real-life acts of crime ranging from church burnings to outright murder. Standing just outside this macabre "inner circle," as it was called, was the Oslo-based Darkthrone, whose mentorship under scene leader (and later, most notorious victim) Euronymous began to bear fruit with their third album, A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Unlike many of their peers -- whose hellish symphonies were often overblown, ultra-complex affairs influenced by classical and Scandinavian folk music -- Darkthrone's was a more straightforward approach. Their bloated lengths aside (see the ten-minute "Kathaarian Life Code"), the songs of A Blaze in the Northern Sky remain relatively uncluttered, and the album's lo-fi production values only serve to highlight their raw, visceral power. The excellent "Paragon Belial" is especially memorable, and with their ghostly pancake makeup only adding to the kids' delight (hey it worked for Kiss, right?), what else could one ask for in the way of dreary, oppressive black metal? ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Darkthrone: Nocturno Culto (vocals, guitar); Zephyrous (guitar); Fenriz (percussion).

| Blaze In The Northern Sky Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Hey darth cartman, shut up please Darh cartman, try to play any of these instruments as darkthrone does. You can't? wow what a letdown...This album sounds really dry, because darkthone wanted it. The sound creates a very dark atmosphere were all instruments unite in darkness. The lyrics are also great...You could never see this, darth crratttmnnn , so please stop ruining the complete 5 stars that this album deserves. And realize I'm not a true black metal intolerant, not by far!!! I also love thrash and death metal, and I´m proud of all music I hear, because if the music is good, all is welcome (in extreme metal, I mean). Hail darkthrone! And so Darkthrone begins... This is true black metal my friends. It's the beginning of Darkthrone's black metal career and a great sign of things to come. Though it does sound a bit different from all their other albums it's an amazing BM cd. Though because it sounds so different (longer songs, and to me the riffs aren't as good or cold as their later works. Production is a bit thicker too) I suggest you give it a listen before buying it just ot make sure this is the kind of BM you're into. But an amazing cd nonetheless. Not my favorite of theirs, but this is brilliant material. Recommended! Submitted by cjl120120 (New Rochelle, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Underwhelming for Darkthrone, ok for standard issue BM I was bored to tears by this album. A basic rehash of Hellhammer riffs (In the Shadow of the Horns) and reaching for a Bathory-esque sort of underproduced black metal feel makes you wish the songwriting was just a little better on this one. There really isn't much to it, and after just a few listens, instead of revealing more layers as good BM does, it just gets kind of boring. For good Darkthrone, buy "Transilvanian Hunger" or "Under a Funeral Moon". Submitted by Imminon (Dallas, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A BLAZE IN THE BLACKMETAL WORLD I FIRST GOT INTO DARKTHRONE IN 2001. THE FIRST RECORD OF THEIRS I GOT WAS PANZERFAUST,I LOVED IT IMMEDIATELY! THE MORE I LISTENED TO IT THE MORE I LIKED IT.I HAVE FOUND THAT TO BE TRUE WITH EACH SUBSEQUENT ALBUM OF THEIRS THAT I BOUGHT.THE SECOND ALBUM OF THEIRS I GOT WAS TRANSYLVANIAN HUNGER,WHICH WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM PANZERFAUST. THEN I BOUGHT A BLAZE....I WAS TOTALY BLOWN AWAY, FROM THE MOMENT IT STARTED.THIS EPIC MASTRPIECE HAD COPLEX SONGS YEY, SUCH A PUNK RWNESS LIKE I HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE.THE ENDING OF IN THE SHADOW OF THE HORNS IS SO OVER THE TOP BRILLIANT IT MAKES THE HAIR ON MY NECK STAND UP!THE PAGAN WINTER IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER.FOR SOMEONE NEW TO DARKTHRONE,OR BLACKMETAL IN GENERAL I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMEND THIS AS A GOOD STARTING POINT.I CAN SAY WHOLE HEARTEDLY THAT A BLAZE IN THE NORTHERN SKY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE RECORDS EVER Submitted by WWW.ROBBCORE667 (CHICAGO IL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Raw and unmerciful: Venom and Bathory fans should buy this! It reminds me of a mix between old Bathory and Venom. I am used to the raw production so it doesn't bother me. Since I bought this album, I like them better than Bathory because the songs are more complex, as opposed to just blast beating the whole song. This album goes through many tempo changes every song too. Buy this album. Submitted by returnofbathory (Pinckney, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
