In what must surely qualify as an historic example of anti-production, the record's songs -- already shorter and more focused than those of its epic-filled predecessor -- were absolutely buried under disfiguring cobwebs of fuzzy amp distortion that effectively made them sound and feel like third-generation cassette copies. Not as good as "A Blaze in the Northern Sky"
Their follow up to "A Blaze... " was a more Black Metal effort than their last. The songs are not as interesting as "A Blaze... ", and they made the production even worse than "A Blaze... ".

How do they get that guitar sound?!?!?!
The term "buzzsaw" has been used to explain guitar tone for so long that it's lost any meaning. On this album though, a buzzsaw on crack is fairly accurate because Darkthrone created a monster on this one.

true fans will say this is not underground enough anymore.
the rules on how to be "cool" in the metal underground. NEVER sign with a major metal label. let it be known in mags and the press that you live the "TRUE" black metal lifestyle even if you dont.
