"Darkthrone is for all the evil in man," proclaims the back cover of Transilvanian Hunger, the Norwegian group's fourth release -- but more controversial is the proclamation that contained within was "Norsk Arisk Black Metal," loosely translated, "Norwegian Aryan Black Metal." One would have to be fluent in Norwegian to understand whether or not Transilvanian Hunger boasts a racist agenda, since all lyrics, save for the vampire-themed title track, are "sung" in said dialect, but such a proclamation reeks of a publicity stunt from this batch of antisocial black metallers (further evidenced by the lyrical contributions of Norwegian scenester/convicted murderer/Burzum leader Varg Vikernes). Look past this malarkey, and you'll find, well, an impenetrable wall of noise, a 39-minute blur of mosquito-buzzing guitar riffs, blastbeats, and inhuman howls. The album boasts a subbasement-level production resembling a distant radio broadcast ripe with ambient noise; the most patient of black metal listeners may find some edible scraps amid the production rubble, but only "Over Fjell Og Gjennom Torner" offers respite with a "Raining Blood"-type break amid a flurry of sloppy, basement-level Norwegian Cuisinart grinding. Transilvanian Hunger boasts plenty of notoriety in the metal underground for its almost laughably anticommercial stance, the band having urped up a light-swallowing black hole of a record whose songs may be respectable underneath all the detritus but, hey, good luck finding 'em. Some will proclaim Darkthrone as the one outfit that stayed true, through most of its career, to the filth-encrusted ethics of the nasty early-'90s Norse black metal scene -- i.e., no frilly keyboards, symphonic wankery, or professional studios -- and maybe Transilvanian Hunger is a testament to the band's unwavering stance, but actually listening to it is another matter entirely. Like most of Darkthrone's early material, it's an unpleasant dentist-drill experience that only the unholiest of unholies will pretend to enjoy. ~ John Serba

Classic...anything else? One of the coldest black metal albums ever created, and , in my opinion , the best Darkthrone´s release, although their 5 first albums are all a perfect example of how the true black metal should be: True darkness , total misanthropy and 0 % stupid politics. Hail Darkthone! Submitted by new_drummer (madrid, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Transilvanian Hunger to represent Black Metal. This is a briliant Black Metal album. I would chose Transilvanian Hunger to represent the genre, however I think Skald Av Satans Sol is the best song by Darkthrone. Submitted by Max (Paekakariki, New Zealand) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Essential Roy Orbison CDs (2006) Remastered
Transilvanian Hunger CD music
$15.95 Roy Orbison has been in such need of a comprehensive, career-spanning compilation like Legacy's 2006 double-disc The Essential Roy Orbison that it's especially frustrating that it falls short of the mark. Not counting Bear Family's exhaustive 2001 set, which gathered everything Roy recorded between 1955 and 1965, including alternate takes, it is the first multi-disc Orbison compilation since 1988's four-disc box The Legendary Roy Orbison, which was released in the midst of his remarkable comeback that peaked the following year with the posthumous comeback Mystery Girl, which arrived too late to be part of Legendary. So, Orbison's catalog truly was missing a set that spanned from "Ooby Dooby," his first hit for Sun in 1956, all the way to his last charting single, 1992's "I Drove All Night." Essential ...

The whole thing really leaps into life, revealing many a nuance and subtlety previously buried in the mix. This was, and remains, my favourite TK disc, refining and developing the sound in no small measure, with the monumental Krigssang II shining brightly, with mucho mellotron, synth and bass solos amongst the riff-rocking guitars to please the greedy prog fan. Whilst retaining a uniquely Swedish character, there are also similarities with Yes Album era Yes. The shrieking falsetto vocals provide a distinctly different flavour, which still startle after repeated listens. Over 17 minutes, this epic track never fails to hold the attention. Marvellous! The disc is worth getting just for that track, but there are plenty of other goodies too - from the moody title track with its unmistakeable Swedish character and throbbing bass, the more gentle pairing of Metamorfoser and Jach Och..., to the menacing riffing of Mitt Mirakel, and not forgetting Murar, which is surprisingly funky. Krigssang is, after all this time, still a work of powerful intensity, conjuring strange moods and unsettling atmospheres with its tortuous riffs and complex metres. The Bonus cuts are early versions of tunes that would appear on the next album (1978's Hej Pa Er) and show a further shift in the sound to reveal a slicker, more polished and commercial (if less adventurous) band, with the addition of keyboards and saxophone courtesy of Mats Lindberg. It's still good stuff and makes ...
