Throw Rag's approach to punk rock is refreshing and yet still time-honored. "Space Hump Me" has a lot of early-'70s punk in it, particularly with the sneering vocals and simple arrangement such as the Damned. Lead singer Captain Sean-Doe never lets loose as the song is wild but still quite tight, much like "Hollywood," which appears later. "Hang Up" continues the party rock atmosphere as more guitars are brought to the fore. However, they mix rockabilly and punk beautifully, especially on "Rule Maker," a tune that could easily be on a Social Distortion album. Performing what they dubbed "sailor rock," "Mission's Message" is the first track that sounds ordinary at best and more like filler despite an exciting guitar solo. The group returns to its strengths with the head-bobbing, fist-pumping "Bag of Glue," another hard punk tune with a washboard thrown in. "Beware of the Dog" is a rock tune seemingly dusted off from the '70s, but Throw Rag deliver it flawlessly. The punk rock gives way to a harder no-nonsense rock sound like Danko Jones and Ten Benson for the latter half, including the gritty "Reno." But "Please Don't Touch," which features Rita D'Albert on backing vocals, is definitely from the Misfits brand of rock. And it ends on a good note with the crunchy rock riffs on "Demons in a Row," a mix of horns and AC/DC circa Bon Scott. ~ Jason MacNeil

Issued in 2005, ALL RISE marks the solo debut of Inara George, vocalist of The Bird and the Bee and daughter of late Little Feat frontman Lowell George. Aided by multi-instrumentalist/producer Michael Andrews (renowned for his film score work on DONNIE DARKO), George presents a set of aching folk-tinged tunes (see "Fools Work") that leave plenty of space for the singer's gentle and inviting voice.
Inara GeorgeAll RiseEvery once in a while, a record comes along that marks the arrival of an authentic new voice, singing songs with which we can immediately identify. These are the records we wait for, the records that borough their way into our heads. All Rise, the transcendently beautiful debut solo album from Inara George, is one of those records.Featuring a collection of captivating songs and George's stunning voice, which KCRW DJ Anne Litt describes as "infinitely listenable," the album has already received regular airplay at the world-famous college station. Raised in Topanga Canyon, in the house that her mother still lives in, Inara was immersed in a wildly creative atmosphere from the start. Her father was the legendary Little Feat slide guitarist and songwriter Lowell George. And though he died when she was just five, she continued to be exposed to the world he'd been a part of. "My mother kept our house open to a lot of creative people," George explains as she recalls a time when the Violent Femmes stayed at her house on their first tour to LA, "and we were always around a lot of live music and art," including the work of her parents' peers, Van Dyke Parks, Jackson Browne, visual artist and musician Terry Allen and many others. But Inara herself never considered a career in music. Instead, she went to college in Boston to study classical theater acting, having grown up performing Shakespeare at Topanga's outdoor Theatricum Botanicum. ("I know it's nerdy, but I love Shakespeare," says George who admits stealing from the bard lyrically on her upcoming album. )One summer home from college, George started the band Lode with some friends from her high school, "on a lark." Much to her surprise they were very quickly signed to Geffen and toured for two years. When they broke up, she escaped to New York to figure out what she might do next...Before long, Inara found herself back in California and in another band, Merrick, her collaboration with Bryony Atkinson. A favorite on KCRW, Merrick was at the center of the burgeoning Silverlake/Echo Park music scene alongside BRMC, Devendra Banhart, Midnight Movies, and Eleni Mandel. The band broke up in 2002. Massive Attack's brooding, atmospheric trip-hop has always had a cinematic quality, so it is no surprise they were tapped by director Louis Leterrier to compose the score for his film DANNY THE DOG (later retitled UNLEASHED).
