Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet star in a pwerfully gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller. An electrifying, suspenseful journey into deadly conspiracy and murderous deception begins when a respected professor who may, or may not, be guilty is charged with a brutal crime. Gale (Kevin Spacey) is a Texas professor and anti-death penalty activist who, ironically enough, winds up on death row for the rape and murder of a colleague. Kate Winslet plays Bitsey Bloom, the brave journalist who sets out to tell to his story. In the days leading up to his execution, Gale fills her in on his life via flashbacks, which include political debates, lectures, sex with a student, rape allegations, alcoholism, divorce, and despair. As the hour of his doom approaches, Bitsey becomes convinced that Gale is the victim of a shadowy political conspiracy and races against the clock to prove his innocence.
Director Alan Parker (MISSISSIPPI BURNING) manages to deliver a strong anti-capital punishment message alongside enough twists, turns and shocking moments to keep viewers perched at the edges of their seats. Winslet and Spacey are both riveting in the leads, but its Laura Linney as Gale's alleged victim--a fellow anti-capital punishment activist and close friend--who makes the biggest impression. Gabriel Mann also scores points in a sympathetic role as Bitsey's intern. Nicholas Cage served as the film's producer. The musical score is by Parker's two sons, Jake and Alex. Life Of David Gale Movie Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Once Is Enough This was a good movie but I wouldn't want to watch it twice. Pro or con, I believe people will be left with a bit of an uncomfortable feeling after this one. The characters of Spacey and Linney touched me and helped me understand the passion that some real-life activists might possess. This movie is definitely not for laughs so I was somewhat thankful for the intern character who untentionally made me chuckle here and there. All the actors were quite believable in their roles. Spacey with his signature straight-faced story telling was reminiscent of "The Usual Suspects". You'll be on the edge of your seat for most of this drama but the ending will make you fall back in you chair muttering "you've got to be kidding!" The Meaning of One's Life For this movie to be just a creation of someone's mind...this story has a strong bond of reality holding it together. Watching it, gives the viewer a sense of fact over fiction...the movie takes place in the state of Texas, where executions are large in number. The story was well written and the movie will leave you breathless. Submitted by The Waco Kidd (Waco, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
A Must See I saw this in the theaters and left feeling strangly moved. This movie will leave you feeling the same. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a functioning intelligence.
