| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Rehome
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John ...

Rehome
$12.69 There are signs of increasing maturity on WHITE PEPPER, Ween's eighth studio album, though not enough to back the claim that Gene and Dean are actually going straight. More like they've achieved a sensible grasp on when to court the masses, and when to drop the Boognish gospel upon the faithful.
A handful of tunes signify Ween's most explicit attempts yet to create genuine silly love songs that become radio hits, and get canonized by the straight world. "Even If You Don't" is a Bay City Rollers-type upfront pop-rock ditty, "Stay Forever" is a gorgeous soft-rock charmer full of the melodic and harmonic magic of ELO, while "Falling Out" is prime faux-Merseybeat fashioned from the Beatles' "Little Girl." That the sentiments in each of these songs ...
| | Bill Laswell Hashshishisheen - The End Of Law CD (1999) (Import)
Rehome
$14.59 This double-CD package pairs together two of Bill Laswell's theme projects based around textual readings with exotic musical accompaniment. The first, City of Light, features Lori Carson reading through the texts of Hakim Bey as inspired by a book by Diana L. Eck, with sonic accompaniment by Coil, Trilok Gurtu, and Tetsu Inoue. Hashisheen centers around readings about Hassan I Sabbah, "the Old Man of the Mountain" who commandeered a band of mystic assassins during medieval times. The cast is more varied here, and includes readers like Nicole Blackman, Iggy Pop, William S. Burroughs, Anne Clark, Genesis P-Orridge, Patti Smith, Sussan Deyhim and others, with music by Techno Animal, Jah Wobble, Paul Schütze, Eyeless in Gaza, Nicky Skopelitis, Helios Creed, and Anton Fier, among others. Musically this is the more adventurous set, but it's the least satisfying. Both of these projects are bogged down in Near Eastern motifs, electronic and dub gobbledy-gook, and perceived textures, and both of them are lost hopelessly in the supposed profundity of their original texts. The bottom line is that this is for Laswell freaks only, and most of them have these anyway. This is simply a ploy to put two Sub Rosa titles back in print. These are two of Mr. Laswell's most forgettable projects. ~ Thom Jurek
Ubiquitous bassist and producer Bill Laswell's fascination with Arabic culture has led him into numerous strange and wonderful projects, including a field recording of Morocco's Master Musicians of Jajouka, a collaboration with William Burroughs on accompanied readings of mystical Egyptian texts, and this, an all-star program on which performers as diverse as Iggy Pop, Hakim Bey, William Burroughs, Patti Smith and the notorious Genesis P. Orridge (of Psychic TV infamy) read selections from ancient and modern texts written by or about the Hashisheen (or Assassins). The Hashisheen were an esoteric terrorist sect founded in 11th-century ...

One look and listen to the impish jazz powerhouse Hiroko Kokubu, and the Keiko Matsui comparisons will start flowing. After all, she resembles a small Asian doll, yet can hold her own with her hefty studio cohorts courtesy of a monstrous musical vision which favors instantly memorable melodies and improvisational chops galore. But there the similarities end. On the swinging Pure Heart, her strict adherence to the percussive possibilities of the acoustic piano show an upbringing full of a sassy blend of fusion ...
