Detractors have long called minimalist bands such as AC/DC, Bad Company and ZZ Top formulaic. By paring rock down to its most basic elements, these bands forged a musical terrain where anything less than mastery over the form would reveal gaping holes in the structure. Remember that there are no keyboards filling up space, or creating diversions on an AC/DC record. The point is, AC/DC's approach may not have varied an inch over the years and it may very well be a formula. It is also a highly effective one.
FLICK OF THE SWITCH carries the spirit of the band's hard rock crunch with capable aplomb. Massive guitar riffs that could capsize a medium size boat, a stomping 4/4-rhythm section and Brian Johnson screeching like a banshee on the warpath. The album's highlights are the mid-tempo "Rising Power," and the bruising title track. When Johnson screams "With a flick of the switch she'll blow you sky high" on the latter, AC/DC proves itself still capable of explosive outbursts.

1983 Flick Of The Switch Music AC / DC Flick Of The Switch Songs Flick Of The Switch Music Flick Of The Switch Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Hidden Gem This album didn't sell as well as others and therefore isn't as well known, but man, it's a real hidden gem. While not all the songs are great, the overall feel of the album really gels. The first four tracks hit pretty hard and are all solid chunks of AC/DC power. Rising and House on Fire are mid-tempo rock with very memorable choruses. Flick of the Switch is a classic scorcher and then Nervous Shakedown is a groover in the vain of For Those about to Rock or Rock in Roll Ain't Noise Polution. Landslide ups the tempo again, but it's not one of my faves. Guns for Hire is a terrific jolt and was a great idea for a single. Why it didn't chart higher is beyond me. Deep in the Hole and Bedlam in Belgium are back to mid-tempo, not bad tunes, but they don't do much for me. Badlands has a massive, recurring riff that goes straight for the throat, a real overlooked slab of rock. And Brainshake closes it out nicely. I put this album in my top 5 AC/DC discs, which are, in no particular order.....Highway to Hell, High Voltage, Back in Black, Flick of the Switch and Razor's Edge. Powerage sits just outside of those. Submitted by Dan (PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

With AC/DC's third release, POWERAGE, the band was dispensing even heftier ammo from their hook-laden cartridge belt. With the rock-steady rhythm section pounding out 4/4 beats as if it were overtaking a small country, guitarists (and brothers) Angus and Malcolm Young trade towering riffs that belie their pint-sized physical stature. The real change on POWERAGE is a noted improvement in songwriting skill. The six-minute "Down Payment Blues" ...

If possible, AC/DC actually made their sound denser on its sophomore effort, LET THERE BE ROCK. A darker album than its predecessor, HIGH VOLTAGE, this album leans further towards AC/DC's twisted extension in the blues tradition. Which is not to say that the band relented from its three-chord power riffing for one millisecond. The presence of Angus Young's mighty Gibson SG looms over the album like a sheet of lead on ...

| | Darwa More Life More Trouble CD (2001)
Flick Of The Switch songs
$12.05 Darwa comes through blazing hot, marking the first artist release following a series of compilations for Abstrakt Reality. Darwa is Darja Klancar and Mario Marlot. Darja writes the songs; Peter Lorimer (Lorimer/Humpty Vision, Danzig, Martha Wash and Kristine W...to name a few) and Mario Marlot co-produce the tracks. The style is reminiscent of something like "Everything but the girl" meets "Dido" whilst hanging out at "Morcheeba's" pad, with "Madonna" dropping in for a visit. The album is very vocal, very melodic, and very danceable. The first track (Hard times) was produced exclusively by Peter Lorimer and the song flows in-between hard guitars and smooth melodic textures. This track had to be the first on the CD."Take a Walk", the third track, is also featured on the "Abstraktions vol. 2" compilation. It seems the one that bridges the electronic side of the group with its electro pop offerings. Many listeners are truly taken by this track, and it will most likely be the first single. The more dance oriented tracks on the album, such as "Freaky Factory and " "Lesson is free" are a clear indication that Darwa is serious about the club scene."Old man", more than any other track leans towards the indie pop side of Darwa and incorporates exotic instruments made by Darja's father. A strong ...
| | Nazz Open Our Eyes: The Anthology CDs (2002) Import
Flick Of The Switch album
$24.45 Recorded between 1968 & 1984. Includes liner notes by Kieron Tyler.
Todd Rundgren's first band the Nazz is given a two-disc anthology treatment here, complete with remastered sound. OPEN OUR EYES is a sure bet for fans of 1960s British psych, and is a must for collectors.
An anthology is usually understood to be a selection of material, but Sanctuary's compilation of recordings by the Nazz, Open Our Eyes: The Anthology, actually collects all of the band's legitimately released tracks on two CDs with a running time of over two hours and ten minutes. That's the 34 songs that made up the albums Nazz, Nazz Nazz, and Nazz III, plus an outtake cover of "Train Kept a Rollin'" first released on the 1985 LP Best of the Nazz and making its CD debut here. But if compiler Kieron Tyler exercises no judgment about what to include, he does take it upon himself to provide a new sequence rather than just running one album after another in the order they were released originally in 1968-1970. There is some justification for this. Nazz Nazz was first intended to be a double album but truncated into a single one, with the extra ...
