Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys: Big Sandy (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ashley Kingman (electric guitar, bass); Jimmy Roy (electric guitar, steel guitar); Jeff West (bass, background vocals); Bobby Trimble (drums).
Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have added a stronger dose of rockabilly rhythm to a few cuts on their seventh album, It's Time!, but otherwise they haven't changed much -- and there's nothing wrong with that. Big Sandy and company have earned a richly deserved reputation as one of the best retro-country acts on the current scene, and It's Time! boasts 14 more examples of what makes them so much fun. Big Sandy has a big, warm voice that's well suited to vintage styles without ever sounding as if he's mired in the past, and his band understands that a light hand (which guitarist Ashley Kingman and pedal steel man Jimmy Roy have along with chops to spare) is what makes vintage country swing. And It's Time! gives the band a healthy variety of material to play with, including the Cajun-flavored "Bayou Blue," the jazzy "Money Tree," the rockin' "Chalk It Up to the Blues," and the swing-centric title cut, while the live-in-the-studio production by Joey Altruda captures the roomy but dynamic sound of a good live gig. In short, if you dig Big Sandy, It's Time! will chart high on your personal play list, and if you're not familiar with their uptown twang, this is a pretty good place to get started. ~ Mark Deming

It's Time album
$14.65 Lyrics translated from the Spanish by Guillermo Hernandaz, Yolanda Zepeda and Jaime Nicolopulos.
Following on from his father Santiago Jimenez' own successful run as a conjunto musician in San Antonio, Flaco Jimenez put together a conjunto of his own in the '50s, eventually becoming one of the most famous figures in Tex-Mex music (also known as Musica Nortena in Mexico). Based on the polkas and waltzes Mexican performers refashioned as rancheras, the Tex-Mex conjunto style features accordion, the 12-string bajo sexto guitar, bass, and drums. Flaco immediately staked his claim in the music with a distinctly imaginative and lively accordion style, finding the ideal backing from equally able Tejano musicians, including his father and his son David. For this excellent 1985 recording, ...

It's Time CD music
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails ...
| | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
It's Time music CDs
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for ...

If Robert Williams, aka Big Sandy, has ever made a bad record, he's done a fine job of keeping it under wraps, and whether it's vintage country & western, Western swing, R&B, rockabilly, or one of ...

It's Time songs
$9.25 Perhaps it's due, as Gary Wallington's liner notes state, to territory and estate restrictions that the Eddie Rabbitt volume in the Rhino Platinum Collection is missing one of his essential hits. Though "Step by Step" appeared on the 1985 CD titled #1's, which cross-licensed material from Rabbitt's Warner, RCA and Curb years, it was before the singer and songwriter passed away; he died in 1998. What is here are 22 excellent tracks with nary a filler in the bunch. Of course it opens with "I Love a Rainy Night," and continues through so many of the hits we associate with him, from "Drinkin' My Baby (Off My Mind)," "Kentucky Rain" (he wrote it), "Suspicions," "Drivin' My Life Away," "Song of Ireland," "We Can't Go on Living Like This," "Hearts on Fire," and "Every Which Way but Loose." But the sound of this compilation with its remastered cuts is easily the best one out there. Like Ronnie Milsap, Eddie Rabbitt (yes, his real name) transcended the limits of Nashville and country ...
