Principally recorded at Sixteenth Avenue Sound, Nashville, Tennessee and Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington in 1996. originally released on EMI (56141). Includes liner notes by Paul Suter.
Queensryche took a drastic turn with 1997's HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER. Challenging the loyalty of their fans, the group moved in a less prog-oriented, more accessible direction with their songwriting. Perhaps the most notable change occurring on this set is the stripped-down production--a first from a band known for epic, heavily-polished recordings. Likewise, the Beatles-influenced "All I Want," features guitarist Chris DeGarmo's first and only turn on lead vocals. Ironically, HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER would be DeGarmo's final contribution as a full-time member of the band (though he later collaborated on several tracks for 2003's TRIBE).
This disc opens with screaming guitars that lead listeners to expect another strong Queensr˙che release. In fact, the opening cut, "Sign of the Times," feels a bit like the fine R˙che rarity "Last Time in Paris," found only on The Adventures of Ford Fairlane soundtrack LP. However, as it carries on, it becomes clear that, like this album as a whole, the song has a tendency to lose its way, and consistency suffers as a result. There are definitely strong points present on Hear in the Now Frontier, but in general it is portions of songs that stand out rather than entire pieces. "Cuckoo's Nest," a hard-rocking piece, is an exception to that rule, though, being one of the most consistent compositions on display here. On the plus side, the album seems a bit harder edged than its predecessor, Promised Land, and that is definitely good for older fans of the band. [This version of the album includes bonus material.] ~ Gary Hill

| Hear In The Now Frontier Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Disappointing Why did Queensryche go in this direction?
I love the band, but this album followed by the truly horrible 'Q2K' akmost lost me. They redeemed themselves a little with 'Tribe'.
This album ended up being sold to the hock shop, I'm afraid. Submitted by Ken (Western Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Pretty Good Ryche Album This album is kind of strange for Queensryche, but is was good. The song that really gets my attention for this album is Hit the Black, awsome. Not their best, but does still deserve a 5 star for creativity and being the fine musicians that they are. Submitted by rycher44 (peoria, illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another Disappointment... I did not like this when it came out, and I still don't like the direction they took with this one, but with that being said, and after repeated listens, several songs are okay if you just take them at face value for what they are and not compare to past work. If you're a pre-Empire/Mindcrime fan, you might not like this. Best tracks - Hit The Black, Get A Life Submitted by Mike (Hondo, TEXAS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Hear In The Now Frontier
$11.69 Finally aided by label support and professional production, Queensryche set about to begin the storied progression of their sound. Once you get past the monotony of the title track, the journey begins. The haunting chimes of the explosive intro to "En Force" show that Seattle had a lot more to offer rock music than the impending grunge rock phenomenon. The somber, brooding outro to the ...

Hear In The Now Frontier
$11.55 The underground buzz that swirled around Queensryche's self-produced EP resulted in a major deal with EMI Records, without so much as a single live show. Much like early Fates Warning records, the band's sound was heavily influenced by the blazing drums and lightning guitar harmonies made famous by Iron Maiden. Vocalist Geoff Tate's soaring tenor voice caught the attention of metal fans around the world, starting with his sustained high E that opens "Queen Of The Reich" and never letting go from there. ...

$9.99 The album that preceded this release, RAGE FOR ORDER, came as a surprise to some fans because of the group's appropriation of electronic sound-generating techniques. Undeterred, the band composed its most challenging work yet, the epic concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME. Originally issued in 1988, the hard-edged album slowly worked its way up the charts and became the band's first gold-certified release (an opening ...

Hear In The Now Frontier
$11.39 With its 1983 self-titled EP and 1984's full-length debut, THE WARNING, Queensryche began as a heavy metal band. But that wouldn't last for long--the members of Queensryche had always been admirers of progressive and art rock, and with the band's third record, 1986's RAGE FOR ORDER, Queensryche began merging its heavy rock with instrumental technicality and modern production techniques. Few other metal bands were challenging their listeners as much as Queensryche, ...
