| | Gary Numan Jagged CD (2006)
Live In Thee Mean Fiddler album
$12.95 On 2006's JAGGED, influential synth-pop artist Gary Numan is firmly entrenched in the dark side. This ominous studio outing finds the British singer/multi-instrumentalist focused on atmosphere more than catchy hooks (a la his lone hit "Cars"), seemingly picking up where David ...

| | Complete Modernaires On Columbia, Vol. 2 (1946-1947) CD (2002)
Live In Thee Mean Fiddler songs
$11.59 After a brief burst of commercial success when they launched their career separate from Glenn Miller, the Modernaires with Paula Kelly began to struggle in the one-year period covered by this second volume of Collectables' four-disc collection of their complete Columbia Records recordings. Popular music taste was changing quickly, along with everything else in the immediate post-World War II era in America, and the style represented by the Modernaires, that lighthearted, swinging approach, may have begun to sound dated. Or maybe the group wasn't getting the right material to record. There are precious few memorable tunes here, beyond the standards "Pennies From Heaven" (a 1936 copyright) and "Margie" (which dates to 1920). The group covered "Hoodle Addle" by Ray McKinley, who had been in Miller's band with them, but they couldn't match his Top 20 version, and they accompanied Dinah Shore on "The Stanley Steamer," which competed unsuccessfully with Jo Stafford's Top 20 version. Their best chance for a hit in this period may have been "The Whistler," actually co-written by group leader Hal Dickinson, but somehow Sam Donohue got there first and reached ...

| | Soundtrack Of Our Lives Origin Vol. 1 CD (2005)
Live In Thee Mean Fiddler music CDs
$8.65 Led by Ebbot Lundberg, Swedish retro-rockers the Soundtrack of Our Lives started making inroads worldwide in the early 2000s. By the time of their 2005 album, ORIGIN VOL. 1, the group had definitively broken through to the mainstream, even charting in the notoriously hard-to-crack US. While TSOOL has never been a band of revivalists self-consciously recreating the sounds of a bygone era, they are clearly indebted to the big guitar riffs, anthemic sweep, and larger-than-life vision of the latter-day Move and mid-period Who and Pretty Things. In other words, ORIGIN VOL. 1 is Swede-filtered Britrock for those who find neo-psychedelia a tad too precious, but still hold dearly to old-school classic-rock values. ORIGIN finds Lundberg and company further refining those values, and adding an unmistakably contemporary ...
