| | Herbie Hancock Piano CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ever Before Ever After music CDs
$7.59 Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import.
Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting.
All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. ...

| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Ever Before Ever After album
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, ...

| | A View From The Top View From The Top CD (2003) Original Soundtrack
Ever Before Ever After songs
$5.65 The soundtrack to the Gwyneth Paltrow stewardess comedy View From the Top features 14 lively, lighthearted songs by female artists and female-fronted groups, including LeAnn Rimes' "Suddenly" -- which recasts her as a more straightforward pop diva than her earlier work -- and Sixpence None the Richer's "I've Been Waiting." Most of the soundtrack trades in the sweet, shiny pop exemplified by Tamara Walker's "Circle of Love" and "Everywhere I Look, There's You," Sofia Loell's "Utopia," and Kaci's "I'm Not Anybody's Girl," although Natalie Grant's soulful vocals on "No Sign of It" and Jo Dee Messina's "Was That My Life" offer a bit of a twist. Likewise, Anna Wilson's "The Bus Ride" and G.G.'s "Sincerely" add a bit of jazzy flair to the album. Overall, View From the Top is so pleasant that it's hard to complain about while it's playing, and so lightweight that it's easy to forget about once it stops. ~ Heather Phares

| | GC5 Kisses From Hanoi/Horseshoes & Handgrenades CD (2003)
Ever Before Ever After album
$11.99 This CD combines both the GC5's first full-length album, 2000's Kisses From Hanoi, and the 2001 EP Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, previously available only from a tiny Irish indie label. Good old-fashioned lefty street punk in the manner of Alternative TV, Stiff Little Fingers, and the early Clash (even though the quartet is actually from turn-of-the-millennium Columbus, OH, not mid-'70s England), these records are brashly ...
| | Cassandra Wilson Glamoured CD (2003)
Ever Before Ever After CD music
$12.49 Cassandra Wilson has garnered a deserving reputation for her soulful, visionary reads of songs by legendary composers old and new, from Robert Johnson to Van Morrison. On Glamoured, Wilson composed half the album, and her songs are as provocative and deserve the same weight of grace critically afforded her covers. She uses her trademark fluid, smoky delivery to redefine songs such as the old soul nugget "If Loving You Is Wrong"; the poignancy it was written with tells of a woman lost in the delirium of a forbidden love with a married man. The ache and euphoria in her voice shot through with producer Fabrizio Sotti's stunning acoustic guitar interplay is nearly overwhelming in its emotion. Her Afro-Caribbean read of Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" is a different -- and perhaps better -- version than the original. It doesn't weep and it doesn't get bogged down in its melody; it is shot through with a smoldering drone and eclectic polyrhythms that reinvent it harmonically. Willie Nelson's ...
