The third in the new 'In The House' series from the Defected imprint comes from two heavy weight producers and deejays in the global dance scene, Junior Jack and Kid Crème, who work it back to back on one CD each. CD one goes deep and soulful and includes Copyright's latest 'Late At Night', Kathy Brown 'Don't Give Up', Soulsearcher's 'Feeling Love', and John Ciafone's boombastic classic 'Everyday'. Also included is an exclusive of DJ Gregory's follow up to 'Tropical Soundclash', 'Elle'. The second disc delivers some peak time action with full on cuts from Thick D, Del Gado, Tedd Patterson, Powers That Be and Shakedown. There is also a massive exclusive of Junior Jack's very own 'E-Samba'. An essential package.Q (10/03, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A fresh and upbeat installment in Defected's 'In The House' series..." Junior Jack In The House Songs | | In The House CD DISC 1: |

In The House album
$15.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ David Waxman.
Despite the rather unfortunate title, Ultra Chilled, Vol. 1 assembles some of the most established names in down-tempo electronica and trip-hop, mixing them with some relative unknowns. The flow from Dido to Gorillaz to St. Germain to Morcheeba is deceptively smooth, as is what will be most listeners' introductions to acts like Zero 7 and Goldfrapp, with each song seamlessly blending into one another. The sequencing on the two-disc set is a little predictable, with many of the better-known artists grouped near the front of each disc, but little glimmers of familiarity (like Alex Gopher's "The Child" on disc two or the impeccable inclusion of Badly Drawn Boy's "The Shining" on the first disc) near the ends frame the collection nicely. What could be considered dusty artifacts in the world of electronic music (Massive Attack's 1991 song "Hymn of the Big Wheel" and Moby's 1992 "Go") sound fresh ...

$13.85 Constructing a mix album out of others' mix albums is a baffling proposition, but Global Underground: Locations does just that. Mixed by the series' own the Forth (previously responsible for Global Underground: Arrivals and Global Underground: Departures), this one also grabs tracks from past editions (devoted to Lee Burridge, John Digweed, Deep Dish, Darren Emerson) with no rhyme and no reason why these tracks couldn't have been taken from the original sources. At least the Forth steers away from high-gloss trance, instead sticking to '90s house. ~ John Bush
The 4th release in the Global Underground Sampler series brings together the highlights of all the big ...

$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ~ John Bush
Fans eager for a successor to the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- will likely be disappointed by Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2. In The House songs
$16.65 Dave Hamilton's Detroit Dancers, Vol. 3, the third volume of rare soul from the vaults of Detroit producer and musician Dave Hamilton, adds a couple dozen more cuts to what's already available from that source, most of them previously unreleased, although a few are taken from rare singles. It's not easy to characterize what's here, since it's a grab bag of local soul with various approaches, most of it done in the 1960s from the sound of things (the copious liner notes do not always give dates, or even estimates of dates, for specific tracks). Unsurprisingly, Motown casts a large shadow over much of the material in the production, songwriting, and even the singing. It's not like listening to a bunch of Motown outtakes; the style isn't quite replicated so imitatively and, to be more blunt, you wouldn't mistake any of the people involved for Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, or Martha Reeves. Instead, it's a varied, listenable assortment of tracks, usually with a pop-soul slant, in which the artists who are involved exhibited some talent, but not enough to make you think they should have been famous or have had big hits. Some tracks make the grade more than others: Simon Barbee's "The Wind" is a nice, lush, sweet soul ballad, and Charmaine's "Send My Baby Back to Me" (which actually made it onto a 1964 single) is rather like early-'60s Motown girl group-influenced records by the likes of the Marvelettes and Mary Wells. It's one of the few songs here where everyone involved seems focused on creating a catchy commercial disc, instead of just throwing some ideas that are in line with commercial trends together to see what sticks. More idiosyncratic are Priscilla Page & Pepe the Poodle's "Throw the Poor Dog a Bone," with constant irritating dog barks, and the Tolbert Family Singers' "Ride the Gospel Train" (from the late 1980s), with exceptionally hoarse ...
