Simple Minds signed to Chrysalis for Néapolis and saw the return of Derek Forbes on bass. Néapolis signals a return to form while remaining on the cutting edge. Unlike U2, the band they have been most often compared to, Simple Minds have not lost themselves in the techno beats and processed samples of their countrymen. Longtime fans will embrace this album; from the opening track, "Song for the Tribes," through the two singles, "Glitterball" and "War Babies," one immediately recognizes that classic sound. Other standout tracks include "Tears of a Guy," "Superman V Supersoul," and a potential third single, "Killing Andy Warhol." The biggest surprise on the album is "Androgyny," a welcomed instrumental in the tradition of their earlier works (see Empires and Dance, Sister Feelings Call, and Sons and Fascination). It's nice to know that in the 1990s, one classic new wave band hasn't forgotten what it is all about. Unfortunately, Chrysalis felt there was not enough of a following outside of Europe to justify the worldwide release of the album. ~ Paul Fucito

Neapolis album
$9.69 No new ground is broken on Cry. In fact, Simple Minds' reliance on glistening synthesizer textures, the band's most distinguishing characteristic when it broke in the mid-'80s, becomes the only notable detail on the disc. With unmemorable material and the vocals of Jim Kerr showing little interpretive or technical advancement, each track hangs heavily on the ...

$13.95 Digitally remastered edtion of their fourth album and it's "ghost". By the time of its release, Simple Minds were on the fast track to stardom when "Sons & Fascination" bolted them further toward the stratosphere. The hit singles attacks of "Love Song", "Sweat In Bullets", "The American" (originally the b-side of "Love Song") made them the darlings of the critical set and of many postpunkers. Their music is still completely art school dark & mysterious, but only slightly ...

Neapolis album
$10.49 Simple Minds' astonishingly rapid ascent from humble and derivative post-punk to platinum and transcendent art pop is just as remarkable as the descent that followed it. More remarkable is the fact that a fair portion of the band's fans have such a strict discographical line in the sand drawn -- right at the chart-crashing masterpiece that is New Gold Dream -- where both sides overlap but don't dare cross. While fans of the band's earlier work essentially drop off with that record (and choose to live in blissful denial that the band existed after that), those on the other end are more or less oblivious to what's on the other side. So what's on that other, earlier side? Five studio albums released within the span of three years. Five studio albums ...

Neapolis music CDs
$14.49 In the CD era, the catalog of the pre-Wheatfield Soul Guess Who has been very hard to come by. Together with Sundazed's Shakin' All Over! (which focuses on their hardest-rocking mid-'60s cuts), this two-CD Canadian collection of rare and unreleased 1967-1968 recordings fills in the gap well. A few of these songs did appear on non-LP Canadian and/or U.K. singles, like the ...
