| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
High Noon music CDs
$13.09 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

| | Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD (2007)
High Noon songs
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning in their own right and reinterpreted beautifully by Hancock, plus a stellar assortment of musicians and guest vocalists.
Mitchell's pop and folk tendencies have been assimilated into the arrangements; the album plays like a vocal jazz outing. Hancock is joined by fellow Miles Davis alums Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland, among others, and the guest vocalists include Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, ...
| | Louis Prima Capitol Collectors Series CD (1991)
High Noon album
$7.09 Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg (October 1990, Capitol Recording Studios).
Louis Prima was an innovator without equal. Jump blues/jazz icons Louis Jordan and Slim Gaillard shared Prima's penchant for combining R&B with swing and good humor, but Prima's cross-section of influences is as singular at it is striking. When Prima made his major impact in the pre-rock & roll '50s, it was a downright bizarre experience to see/hear an Italian-American combining blues, swing, pop, R&B and Italian songs in a wild, unfettered style that foreshadowed the arrival of Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.
If you're a newcomer to Prima's work, you'd be hard pressed to find a better introduction than this 26-track compilation that includes his most popular material. With R&B saxman Sam Butera and singer/wife ...

| | Sonny Greenwich Hymn To The Earth CD (1994)
High Noon songs
$14.39 Sonny Greenwich, long considered one of Canada's most consistently creative guitarists, is very relaxed on this recording for his label Kleo. Simple rhythms and vamps are the basis for most of the originals and Greenwich plays quite slow and melodically, letting his notes really ring while constructing improvisations that develop gradually. Backed by a fine rhythm section, Greenwich's melancholy flights are given such titles as "Hymn to the Earth," "Nature Prays" and "Invocation," but the music is not of the one-mood new age variety. Some of the performances could have been briefer and the development a bit quicker but, excepting a throwaway vocal by Ernie Nelson on "Serengeti," Greenwich's latest project (which sometimes crosses over into folk and world music) is rewarding. ~ Scott Yanow

$7.59 Along with Max Roach, Kenny Clarke was one of the definitive drummers of jazz's original bebop movement. By the time of the BOHEMIA AFTER DARK sessions (in June 1955), Clarke was firmly established as a bandleader. He probably didn't know it at the time but Clarke also made jazz ...
