With the aura of Nickelback's modern-day equivalent still shining brightly, Closure followed in those fresh footsteps with an eponymous debut that possessed all of the same qualities as the famous Canadians. The production is big and glossy, the riffs hit you with the same shiny brilliance that evoked memories of Journey in the '80s and Boston in the '70s, and the songs are all perfectly executed paeans that seem designed to appeal to rock radio programmers first and foremost. The Achilles' heel isn't the generic nature of the disc, as the band's obvious talents -- most notably Brian Howes' soaring vocals, harmonized with to full effect more often than not throughout the album -- are ample enough to overcome sounding similar. What taints Closure is just how perfectly it parrots the pop charts; every note is perfect, every hook is perfect, every emotion seems there not for catharsis but commerce. The members of Closure want to be rock stars, and there's nothing wrong with that. The problem isn't the ambition, it's how the ambition seems to have overridden everything else in the band's formation, and in these post-millennial times, forget about what the critics say -- the kids see right through such pandering. ~ Brian O'Neill

A FUTURE CLASSIC If talent and fair play were the staple requirements of success, Closure should be walking it. Hitting you between the eyes with an aggressive blend of Nickelback and Harem Scarem, Closure-a Los Angeles based four piece-offer 11 tracks of contemporary hard rock that won’t be bettered this year. Lyrically the band reflect on past experiences; Canadian Brian Howe’s vocals- delivered with guts and emotion bring the Harem Scarem tinged ‘I Don’t Mind the Rain’ and the spectacular ‘Live Again’ to life, whilst the straight ahead bludgeon of the immense ‘You Are My Hatred’ or ‘Whatever Made You’- a close cousin of Nickelbacks earlier material- intimate that Closure are not ones to threaten with mawkishness.
Hugely melodic, Closure’s debut album-one with enormous crossover potential-is of the required standard to be regarded as a classic in years to come.

Closure
$10.45 It's a testament to the conviction of Breaking Benjamin that two of its members quit another band already signed to a major label to join what was, commercially, much less of a sure thing. SATURATE's success proved them right, though. A melting pot of post-grunge riffs, nu-metal power, and classic rock accessibility, Breaking Benjamin offers something for hard rock fans of all stripes. Melodic choruses and signature riffs rub shoulders with screeching, from-the-gut vocals and amps-on-11 guitar firestorms. By paying homage to all their influences simultaneously, the band seems to have come up with a hard-hitting sound whose whole is greater than the sum of its already-impressive parts on BB's chart-bound debut album SATURATE.
Contains an untitled hidden track following "Shallow Bay".
Jeremy Hummel (drums, background vocals).
Prod.By Ulrich Wild (Deftones, Powerman 5000,Static X)

| | Vonray CD (2003)
Closure
$9.29 Vonray's self-titled Elektra debut is a collection of guitar anthems and ballads that should appeal to fans of middling adult alternative groups like Live, Vertical Horizon, and Remy Zero. Vaughan Rhea is the band's namesake, frontman, and one of three guitarists. He is joined by brother Dave Rhea on bass, drummer Jeff Irizarry, and fellow guitarists Garrett Coleman and Todd Hackenburg. While Vaughan seems to have a strong voice, his delivery here is an irritating three-part impersonation of Eddie Vedder, Ed Kowalczyk, and Scott Stapp. Each lyrical couplet ends with a short, emotive intake of air; most choruses erupt in the throaty, arena-ready bellow Vedder bequeathed to Stapp. Musically, the band evokes the stilted, tentative pop style of CCM groups such as Jars of Clay. Quasi-spiritual lyrics ("Evil deeds that breed temptation," from the Pearl Jam-meets-Live songwriting project "Part of Me") don't help matters any. The rousing first single "Inside Out" has gained exposure for the band through its inclusion on the Smallville soundtrack; there, it is in good company with sound-alikes Lifehouse and Steadman. "Inside Out" is also one of only two songs on Vonray written exclusively by Rhea or his band. The majority of the record was co-written by Rhea and producer Marc Tanner, who has worked with the Calling, another overly dramatic modern rock combo with a strikingly derivative sound. Since so many of these groups lack even the relative grit of a band like Creed, yet aren't talented enough as players or songwriters to appeal to the more discerning alternative music consumer, they are destined to fill the middle spots on soundtracks to romantic comedies, or, in Vonray's case, to programs on the WB. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Depswa Two Angels And A Dream CD (2003)
Closure
$8.65 Depswa is yet another California combo to wade in the grunge and nü metal morass that oozed all over radio and MTV after the breakout success of Linkin Park and P.O.D. It's these groups that Depswa references most on its Geffen debut, along with frequent nods to the Deftones. But despite the LP's tendency to sound like what has been heard before, there's still some solid, if not particularly groundbreaking, songwriting happening on Two Angels and a Dream. Jeremy Penick's vocals don't lean fully on established styles (i.e., the monotone moan, the singsong rap yelp). Rather, he fluctuates between traditional metal vocalism and the quiet-loud dynamic favored by nü metallurgists. Likewise, his mates change up their instrumental approach enough to avoid the sound-alike tag, even if, in the end, Two Angels doesn't stray too far from the established formula of success. (After all, producer Howard Benson helmed P.O.D.'s Satellite.) The title track is built around a surprisingly introspective guitar line and builds to an urgent, exploding chorus with the aid of backing vocals that intertwine with Penick's before harmonizing with him on the title-line payoff. Despite being mixed by go-to pro Chris Lord-Alge to pop with the same effect as previous post-grunge radio hits, the song's furious changes still retain vestiges of California's hardcore tradition. "From the Inside" is almost a carbon copy of the title track and is just as faithful to the P.O.D. gospel. Nevertheless, it's a solid cut that displays some real talent on the part of Penick and his mates Dan Noonan (guitar), Ryan Burchfield (bass), Gordon Heckaman (drums), and James Mills (guitar). "Charades" features some of the most brutal breaks on the record but is marred by brooding, slow bridges that don't add the depth the band no doubt hoped they would. "Silhouette," however, is more accurate, and "Prom Song" and first single "This Time" are standouts that teeter on the positive side of genre similarity. As the nü met
| | Breaking Benjamin We Are Not Alone CD (2004)
Closure
$10.45 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn.
With strong melodies reminiscent of Staind or Incubus at their most accessible, the Pennsylvania combo makes good use of soaring vocal harmonies and unusual production touches (the piano intro on "Breakdown" and the swirling, phase-shifting guitars on "Believe") to separate itself from the heavy-rock pack. On "Forget It" and the closing ballad "Rain," Breaking Benjamin gets downright New Romantic, suggesting a diversity unusual among its contemporaries.
Breaking Benjamin: Ben Burnley (vocals, guitar); Aaron Fink (guitar); Marcus James (bass guitar); Jeremy Hummel (drums, percussion).

| | 10 Years Autumn Effect CD (2005)
Closure
$11.49 The well-crafted, progressive alt-metal on 10 Years' 2005 debut THE AUTUMN EFFECT proves they are one of the more promising bands on the scene. With the dramatic, tightly wound vocals of Jesse Hasek leading the way, 10 Years draw on influences like Tool and the Deftones in structure and mood, yet do not shy away from commercially viable melodies. Brooding atmospheres, plus lyrics that explore the darker corridors of human feeling, keep 10 Years firmly in the "dark rock" category, but their engaging craft and penchant for anthemic choruses indicate that they are equally ready for radio.
10 Years: Jesse Hasek (vocals); Matt Wantland, Tater (guitar); Lewis Cosby (bass guitar); Brian Vodinh (drums, background vocals).
Additional personnel: Michael Harrison , Ruth Brugger-Johnson (violin); Novi Novog (viola); Nancy Stein-Ross (cello); Rick Bemis (double bass).

ABBA GENERATION is an album of Abba covers by the popular teen group A-Teens from (where else?) Sweden. "Dancing Queen," "Super Trouper," and "Name of the Game" are included among other Abba classics.
One can't help wondering how four teenagers singing classic Abba songs could possibly be the rage among Y2K kids, but thanks to THE ABBA GENERATION, it most definitely is. With modern-sounding updates of classic songs like "Mama Mia," "Dancing Queen" and "Take A Chance On Me," THE ABBA GENERATION is not only an interesting transformation and revitalization of songs that were popular over 25 years earlier, it's a danceable, club-ready pop explosion. The four teenagers, Marie Sereneholt, Sara Lumholdt, Dhani Lennevald, and Amit Paul are spirited, talented singers, taking on material that other performers couldn't touch. Their vocal performances are impressive for such young artists. Both longtime Abba fans and newcomers to the songs will have fun with this enjoyable trip through classic material given a modern spin.
Huge teen group from Sweden's smash debut full-length of Abba covers.

| | Los Alacranes De Durango En Vivo En Piedras Negras, Coahuila CD (2001)
Closure
$10.55 As a trio of accordion, bajo sexto, and contrabass, Los Alacranes De Durango create a full and energetic norteño sound on En Vivo!. As for what differentiates them from so many other similar artists working in the same field (several on Arhoolie Records), you'd be hard-pressed to come up with specifics, though Eusevio Gallegos generates some nice staccato bursts of accordion at the beginning of some tracks. The slow, mournful instrumental "Alma Angelina" makes for a good variation in mood in the midst of what's for the most part an upbeat, perky set. It's a competent release in the genre, performed with spirit and two-part vocals, but nothing more than that. Perhaps because it's a mid-price release, there are no details about the group or English song translations in the liner notes, which does enhance the appreciation of such recordings for non-specialists. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Mystery Girls Something In The Water CD (2004)
Closure
$12.95 This Green Bay, WI, band's second album is an unholy stew of sloppy, early-'70s Rolling Stones, Midwestern bar band sweat, Detroit proto-punk, and bits of '60s garage rock and psychedelia floating around here and there. Bluesy, boozy guitar rock (with harmonica) is at the base, but given a raucous, snide punky attitude in its execution. In a way, it's music that belongs to no real era; certainly it's revivalistic of some genres, but it doesn't fall neatly into either a late-'60s/early-'70s hard rock groove or a later punk-ish tributary. For some listeners, that description makes them sound like manna from heaven. But it's actually kind of ordinary and unremarkable, even given as hard as these guys are obviously trying to be raunchy and outrageous. The throaty vocals are artless, and what's worse, the production half-submerges them in the mix. Perhaps that was an intentional decision, but when you're working territory many bands have already dug into, lyrics can do something to make you stand out from the crowd. The result is a pretty blurry affair, both in sonics and conception, that like a blurry motion picture doesn't register sharply on the senses or the memory. ~ Richie Unterberger
