Members of an Antarctic research team are killed off by a frozen alien they uncover. One of the great science fiction classics made in the 50s -- the period when the genre thrived.
A group of US scientists and servicemen, stationed on the North Pole, encounter an odd magnetic phenomenon that confuses all of their instruments. When the crew goes out to investigate, they find a block of ice containing an odd life form. But this is no archeological discovery -- because when the block melts, an invincible, grotesque creature, smarter and more powerful than humans, rises and goes on a rampage, almost destroying the polar station. Now the occupants of the station have to stop The Thing before it kills them... and embarks on its plan to destroy the planet. A wonderfully crisp script and quick-paced direction distinguishes this film about an alien creature discovered near an Arctic outpost. Members of a scientific research team cart the frozen pilot back to camp where it thaws out--much to their regret. The Turner videocassette is part of the "RKO Collection." Thing Reviews: "...[A] sci-fi classic..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...THE THING is a rare cautionary Cold War tale that's also plain fun..."
-- Joshua Rich, Entertainment Weekly 5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a Cold War masterpiece, paranoid tension building slowly as a team of egghead scientists and square-jawed air force officers discover a deep-frozen UFO."-- Jamie Russell, Total Film "Dimitri Tiomkin's rousing score cranks up the tension while Russell Harlan's atmospheric cinematography helps convince us that we really are in some icy wilderness."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound
This is the only Margaret Sheridan video. Thing Movie Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Good Old Fashioned Horror Fare Remembered cowering behind the sofa when this was on as a Kid, and just had to have it. It's a great Old Sci-Fi film, full of the cliches that populated the Movies of that time. The Monsters were simple and direct, the Guys had square Jaws and were decent blokes, and there was always some Girl who happened to be in the most unusual place and was threatened by the Monster. The Mad professor is also evident in this flick. The story stands up even after all these years, and is worth a look to see the basis on which Most Modern Sci-Fi films were built. It really is a great film, and is a thoroughly diverting 90 Minutes of shock, Horror & Triumph. Submitted by roger.myers (Bracknell, Berks. UK) Was This Review Helpful? $10.29 Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever ...

| | Day The Earth Stood Still DVD (1951)
Thing movie DVD
$9.69 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come 250 million miles to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience, Helen Benson (Patricia Neal), and her inquisitive son, Bobby (Billy Gray). Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message, and the government's witch hunt for the alien. Made during the cold war--when Americans were obsessed with the destructive capabilities ...

$7.05 Mexican director Antonio Serrano fuses comedy and suspense in this tall tale of children's book author Lucia (Celia Roth, of ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER fame), who becomes the center of a a big mess of intrigue when her husband mysteriously disappears. Coming to her aid are two neighbors in her Mexico City apartment building: Felix (Carlos Álvarez-Novoa), an old man who used to fight alongside Castro, and handsome young Adrian (Kuno Becker) who may be working for the terrorists who kidnapped her husband (if in fact they did). After lots of suspense and snooping, the three become close friends and decide to take an Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN-style trip into the desert. Adrian and Lucia fall in love, though their age difference is a cause for concern. Of course nothing turns out to be as it seems, even Lucia (in her offscreen narration) admits she is not always truthful; outcomes of events are changed--as is her character's hair color and apartment layout--several times over the course of the film. LUCIA, LUCIA broke opening weekend box office records when it premiered in Mexico, where it's known ...
